The Pea Puffer, scientifically known as Carinotetraodon travancoricus, is a tiny, charismatic species of freshwater pufferfish native to the slow-moving rivers, streams, and lakes of the Western Ghats in southern India. It is highly valued in the aquarium hobby for its bold personality, attractive coloration, and unique behaviors, making it a favorite for nano and species-only tanks.

Adult Pea Puffers typically reach about 1 inch (2.5 cm) in length, making them one of the smallest pufferfish in the world. They have a rounded, compact body with bright yellow to olive-green coloration, accented by dark spots and iridescent golden eyes. Males may develop subtle wrinkles behind the eyes and display deeper coloration, while females are generally rounder and paler.

A tank of at least 10 gallons is recommended for a small group. Pea Puffers are best kept in groups of at least six to minimize aggression and promote natural social interactions, but provide ample visual barriers and dense planting to reduce territorial disputes. The aquarium should include soft sand or fine gravel substrate, live or artificial plants, driftwood, and plenty of hiding spots made from rocks or decorations.

Water parameters for the Pea Puffer should include a temperature range of 74 to 82°F (23 to 28°C), a pH between 6.5 and 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. Clean, stable water with minimal nitrates is important for their long-term health, so regular partial water changes and gentle filtration are recommended.

Feeding the Pea Puffer requires attention to their predatory nature and small size. They are carnivores and prefer live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, and snails (which help keep their teeth trimmed). Most individuals will not accept dry or flake foods, so variety and quality are important for optimal health.

Pea Puffers are intelligent and curious, but can be territorial and occasionally nippy, especially in cramped or poorly structured tanks. They are best kept either in species-only setups or with carefully chosen tankmates such as fast-moving, non-nippy fish or shrimp, but avoid slow-moving or long-finned species.

Breeding the Pea Puffer in captivity is possible but requires a well-planted tank and careful monitoring of pairs or small groups. Females lay eggs on leaves or in dense plant growth, and males may guard the site until hatching. Fry should be fed infusoria or newly hatched baby brine shrimp once free-swimming.

Carinotetraodon travancoricus (Pea Puffer) is a fascinating, interactive nano species that brings energy and personality to small, well-maintained aquariums.
