Peace Lily, Spathiphyllum wallisii, is a tropical flowering plant native to Central and northern South America, where it grows on the shaded forest floor and along stream margins in warm, humid environments. Although often sold as an "aquarium plant," Peace Lily is not a true aquatic species and should only be grown emersed, with its leaves above the waterline. It is exceptionally well suited for paludariums, ripariums, aquaponic systems, and pond margins where the roots remain submerged while the foliage stays in open air.

When grown emersed, Peace Lily develops lush, glossy, dark green leaves that emerge from a compact basal crown. Mature plants typically reach 12 to 24 inches in height, though larger specimens can exceed 30 inches under ideal conditions. Throughout the growing season, the plant produces its signature white spathes surrounding a cream-colored spadix, creating one of the most recognizable and elegant flowers used in tropical displays. Its rich green foliage and bright white blooms provide a striking contrast in riparian and paludarium environments.

Peace Lily should be positioned so that only the roots and lower crown remain in water or consistently moist substrate. The leaves and growing crown must remain above the waterline, as prolonged submersion will eventually cause the plant to decline and rot. It performs best under moderate lighting with high humidity, though it tolerates lower light levels better than many tropical plants. Direct, intense sunlight should generally be avoided, as it can scorch the foliage.

Water conditions are highly flexible because the foliage remains above water. Root systems perform well in temperatures between 70 and 84 degrees Fahrenheit, with a pH range of roughly 6.0 to 7.8 and soft to moderately hard water. The species is extremely tolerant of varying water chemistry provided the roots remain healthy and the crown stays dry.

Peace Lily is a heavy nutrient consumer and readily absorbs nitrogen and other dissolved nutrients directly from the water through its root system. This makes it an outstanding natural filter for aquariums, paludariums, aquaponic systems, and indoor ponds. Healthy growth is supported by nutrient-rich water and occasional fertilization if nutrient levels become depleted.

This species is highly compatible with aquarium and pond livestock because only the roots are submerged. The extensive root system provides excellent shelter for fish, shrimp, and fry while also creating additional surface area for beneficial bacteria. Because of its rapid nutrient uptake, Peace Lily can contribute significantly to improving water quality in established systems.

Spathiphyllum wallisii is one of the most attractive and effective emersed plants available for freshwater displays. Its elegant foliage, iconic white flowers, ease of care, and exceptional nutrient-filtering ability make the Peace Lily an outstanding choice for paludariums, ripariums, aquaponic systems, and any aquarium where an attractive emersed plant is desired.
