Peruvian Festivum, Mesonauta mirificus, is a South American cichlid native to the upper Amazon Basin of Peru, where it inhabits slow-moving rivers, flooded forests, oxbow lakes, and quiet tributaries associated with the Ucayali and adjacent river systems. These habitats are typically warm, soft, and slightly acidic, with abundant submerged roots, fallen branches, aquatic vegetation, and overhanging rainforest canopy that creates shaded conditions.

Adult Peruvian Festivums typically reach about 5 to 6 inches in length. The body is tall, laterally compressed, and distinctly disc-shaped, giving the fish an elegant profile that resembles a freshwater angelfish. Base coloration ranges from pale olive to golden bronze with beautiful blue-green iridescence scattered across the scales. A bold black stripe extends diagonally from the dorsal fin through the eye to the lower jaw, creating the species' unmistakable facial pattern. The dorsal, anal, and caudal fins often develop subtle blue, turquoise, and reddish highlights, while mature specimens display elongated finnage that enhances their graceful appearance. Their habit of swimming among vertical branches and plants further adds to their elegance.

A tank of at least 75 gallons is recommended for a pair or small group, with larger aquariums preferred for community setups. Peruvian Festivums appreciate heavily planted aquariums with driftwood, root structures, broad-leaved plants, and open swimming space. They naturally orient themselves among vertical structures, making tall plants and branches especially beneficial. Gentle to moderate water movement is ideal.

Water conditions should remain stable and clean. Temperatures between 76 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of roughly 5.5 to 7.2 and soft to moderately soft water preferred. Regular water changes, strong biological filtration, and stable water chemistry help maintain health and encourage natural behavior.

Feeding is uncomplicated. In nature Mesonauta mirificus feeds on insects, small crustaceans, fruits, seeds, and other plant material that enters the water from the surrounding forest. In the aquarium they readily accept quality cichlid pellets, flakes, frozen foods such as bloodworms, mysis shrimp, and brine shrimp, along with vegetable-based foods and occasional fresh greens. A varied omnivorous diet promotes vibrant coloration and overall health.

Temperament is peaceful for a cichlid of its size. Peruvian Festivums coexist well with larger tetras, peaceful Geophagus, Corydoras, peaceful catfish, and other calm South American species. They are generally non-aggressive outside of breeding, making them excellent centerpiece fish for larger Amazonian community aquariums.

Breeding is readily achievable in captivity. Peruvian Festivums are substrate spawners that lay eggs on broad leaves, driftwood, or flat rocks. Both parents actively guard the eggs and fry, displaying excellent parental care until the young become free-swimming. Their attentive breeding behavior is one of the highlights of keeping the species.

Mesonauta mirificus is an elegant and underrated South American cichlid that combines graceful body shape, striking facial markings, and peaceful temperament. Its ability to thrive in planted Amazonian aquariums, along with its fascinating parental care and beautiful coloration, makes the Peruvian Festivum an exceptional centerpiece species for aquarists seeking a refined and community-friendly cichlid.
