Pi Tetra

Pi Tetra, Protocheirodon pi, is a small South American characin native to the upper Amazon Basin of Peru and western Brazil. It inhabits slow-moving blackwater and clearwater tributaries, flooded forest margins, and small streams with abundant leaf litter, submerged roots, and dense marginal vegetation. These habitats are typically warm, soft, and slightly acidic, with subdued lighting created by overhanging rainforest canopy.

Adult Pi Tetras typically reach about 1.25 to 1.5 inches in length. The body is slender and laterally compressed with a brilliant silver base that reflects blue, green, and gold iridescence under aquarium lighting. The species is named for the distinctive dark marking on the caudal peduncle that resembles the Greek letter "π" (pi), making it immediately recognizable among South American tetras. The fins are generally transparent with subtle yellow to amber highlights, giving the fish a clean, elegant appearance. When maintained in large schools, their metallic bodies and unique tail markings create an eye-catching display of synchronized movement.

A tank of at least 15 to 20 gallons is suitable for a proper school, though larger aquariums provide greater stability and a more impressive display. Pi Tetras are active schooling fish and should be maintained in groups of eight or more to encourage natural behavior and reduce stress. The aquarium should include plants, driftwood, leaf litter, and shaded areas while preserving open swimming space through the midwater. Dark substrates and subdued lighting help emphasize their metallic coloration.

Water conditions should remain stable and clean. Temperatures between 74 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of roughly 5.5 to 7.0 and soft to moderately soft water preferred. Like many Amazonian characins, Pi Tetras display their best coloration and behavior under stable conditions with regular water changes and excellent water quality.

Feeding is straightforward. In nature they consume tiny insects, insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and other small aquatic invertebrates. In the aquarium they readily accept finely crushed flakes, micro-pellets, frozen foods such as cyclops, daphnia, and baby brine shrimp. A varied diet promotes healthy growth, vibrant coloration, and natural activity.

Temperament is peaceful and community-friendly. Pi Tetras coexist well with other small, non-aggressive fish including pencilfish, Corydoras, small rasboras, dwarf cichlids, and other peaceful tetras. Their calm disposition and schooling behavior make them particularly well suited to planted and blackwater-style aquariums.

Breeding has been achieved in captivity but is uncommon. Like many small characins, they are egg scatterers that deposit adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or spawning media. Adults provide no parental care and may consume eggs if left in the breeding aquarium.

Protocheirodon pi is a rare and highly distinctive Amazonian tetra prized for its shimmering metallic body and unmistakable π-shaped tail marking.
