Pictus Catfish

The Pictus Catfish, scientifically known as Pimelodus pictus, is a sleek, fast-moving pimelodid catfish native to the western and central Amazon Basin of South America. Its natural range spans large portions of Peru, Colombia, Brazil, and Bolivia, where it inhabits silty and sandy tributaries of major river systems including the Ucayali, Marañón, Huallaga, Nanay, Putumayo, Juruá, Solimões, and Madeira drainages. Across this range it lives in moderately flowing, turbid waters where long sensory barbels help it navigate and locate food.

Adult Pimelodus pictus reach around 4 to 5 inches in total length and are easily recognized by their shining silver bodies marked with irregular black spots and by their extremely long, trailing barbels. They are highly active swimmers that constantly move through both the midwater and bottom zones of the aquarium. This species is naturally social, becoming noticeably more confident, visible, and naturally behaved when kept in groups rather than kept alone.

A tank of at least 55 gallons is recommended for a group, as this catfish requires extensive open swimming space. Aquascapes should incorporate driftwood, smooth stones, roots, and shaded resting areas while still leaving broad, unobstructed lanes for high-speed movement. Fine sand or smooth gravel helps protect their delicate barbels. Moderate to strong current is ideal, as it closely mirrors the flow conditions of their native river habitats.

Water conditions should be warm, clean, and stable, with temperatures between 72 and 80°F, a pH of 6.5 to 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. Strong filtration and good oxygenation are important, as Pimelodus pictus produces a noticeable bioload and reacts poorly to accumulated waste or sudden fluctuations in water chemistry.

Feeding is straightforward. In nature this species consumes insect larvae, small crustaceans, and other tiny aquatic organisms. In the aquarium it readily accepts sinking carnivore pellets, frozen foods such as bloodworms and mysis shrimp, and a variety of small meaty prepared foods. Their fast, competitive feeding style means slower tankmates may need assistance at mealtime.

Temperamentally, the Pictus Catfish is peaceful toward similarly sized or larger fish but will quickly swallow anything small enough to fit into its mouth. Shrimp, fry, and small nano fish are not suitable companions. Ideal tankmates are mid-sized peaceful fish that appreciate similar water movement and can compete at feeding time.

Breeding Pimelodus pictus in home aquariums has not been documented. In the wild they are believed to be seasonal spawners influenced by annual flood cycles and environmental cues not easily replicated in captivity.
