Pink Racer Nerite Snail, Neritina pulligera, is a freshwater snail widely distributed across Southeast Asia and the Indo-Pacific region, including Indonesia, the Philippines, and surrounding island systems. It inhabits rivers, streams, and coastal freshwater systems with moderate to strong flow, rocky substrates, and abundant surfaces for grazing. Although commonly found in freshwater as adults, the species has an amphidromous life cycle, with larvae requiring brackish or marine conditions to develop.

Adult Pink Racer Nerite Snails typically reach about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter. The shell is smooth and rounded with a slightly flattened profile, displaying a striking combination of deep black or dark brown base coloration with bold pink to reddish striping or racing patterns across the surface. Pattern intensity and coloration can vary between individuals, but the high-contrast markings make this variety especially eye-catching. The body itself is usually dark, and the snail moves with a steady, deliberate grazing motion.

A tank of at least 10 gallons is suitable, though they can be kept in smaller aquariums if water quality is well maintained. Pink Racer Nerite Snails do best in established tanks with stable conditions and plenty of surfaces for grazing. Rocks, driftwood, and glass surfaces provide feeding areas, while moderate to strong water movement helps replicate their natural habitat.

Water conditions should be stable and mineral-rich. Temperatures between 72 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of roughly 7.0 to 8.5 and moderate to high hardness. Adequate calcium and mineral content are important for maintaining healthy shell growth. Sudden changes in water chemistry should be avoided.

Feeding is primarily based on natural grazing. Pink Racer Nerite Snails feed on algae, biofilm, and microorganisms that grow on surfaces. In aquariums with limited algae growth, they should be supplemented with algae wafers, blanched vegetables, or prepared invertebrate foods. They are efficient cleaners but should not be relied upon as the sole method of algae control.

Temperament is completely peaceful. Pink Racer Nerite Snails are safe with fish, shrimp, and plants, and they do not damage live plants. They are well suited for community aquariums and planted tanks where their grazing behavior is beneficial.

Reproduction does not occur in freshwater aquariums. While adults may lay eggs, the larvae require brackish to marine conditions to develop, so populations will not increase under normal freshwater conditions.

Neritina pulligera is a hardy, attractive snail that combines striking shell patterning with excellent algae-grazing ability. Its low impact on tank populations, peaceful nature, and distinctive appearance make it a popular choice for aquarists seeking a functional and decorative invertebrate.
