Pink Tail Chalceus-XL

Chalceus macrolepidotus, commonly known as the Pinktail Chalceus or Pinktail Characin, is a large, fast-swimming characin native to northern South America. Its natural distribution includes major river systems within the Amazon and Orinoco regions, including occurrences across Venezuela, Colombia, Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, and the Guianas (Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana). In the wild it inhabits open river channels, flooded forest edges, and broad tributaries with strong current, high oxygen levels, and expansive open water where it spends most of its time cruising near the surface.

Adult Pinktail Chalceus commonly reaches 8 to 10 inches in length and has a powerful, torpedo-shaped body covered in very large, reflective silver scales. The caudal fin develops the characteristic pink to reddish coloration that gives the species its common name, often becoming more intense as the fish matures. The mouth is slightly upturned, reflecting its surface-oriented feeding habits, and the overall body form is built for speed and endurance rather than maneuvering through tight structure.

This species requires a very large aquarium to thrive. A minimum tank size of 125 gallons is recommended, with long tank length and open swimming space being far more important than height. The layout should emphasize unobstructed water for constant movement, with driftwood or roots positioned along the perimeter for security rather than through the center. A tight, secure lid is mandatory, as Chalceus macrolepidotus is extremely skittish and capable of powerful jumping when startled.

Water conditions should reflect large tropical river environments. Temperatures between 75 and 82°F are ideal, with a pH ranging from 6.0 to 7.5 and soft to moderately hard water. Strong filtration, excellent oxygenation, and consistent water quality are critical, as this species has a high metabolism and produces significant waste. Stability matters more than precise numbers, and sudden changes can lead to stress or injury.

Feeding the Pinktail Chalceus requires a protein-rich, surface-oriented diet. In nature it feeds on insects, small fish, crustaceans, and other drifting prey. In the aquarium it readily accepts floating pellets, flakes, frozen foods, and meaty offerings such as shrimp or fish flesh. It is a fast and aggressive feeder, so meals should be managed carefully and tankmates must be able to compete.

Temperament is best described as energetic and assertive rather than truly aggressive. Chalceus macrolepidotus is not suitable for small fish, which may be eaten or injured, and slow or timid species are easily stressed by its speed and activity. It is best housed with other large, robust fish that can tolerate strong flow and active tankmates.

Breeding Chalceus macrolepidotus in home aquariums is extremely rare and not well documented, as reproduction is likely tied to seasonal flooding and environmental cues that are difficult to replicate in captivity.
