Polar Blue Parrot Cichlid

Polar Blue Parrot Cichlid, commonly sold as the Polar Blue Parrot or Polar Parrot Cichlid, is a selectively bred hybrid Central American cichlid. It is generally considered to have been developed using Convict Cichlid lineage together with Blood Parrot-type hybrid stock, although the exact breeding history of the strain is not formally documented. Unlike naturally occurring cichlid species, the Polar Blue Parrot has no wild distribution and was developed specifically for the ornamental aquarium trade.

Adult Polar Blue Parrot Cichlids typically reach about 4 to 5 inches in length, giving them a much more manageable adult size than traditional Blood Parrot Cichlids. Their appearance combines the compact, rounded body of a parrot-type cichlid with the bold barring of a Convict Cichlid. The body is typically icy blue, powder blue, blue-gray, or silvery blue and is crossed by a series of dark charcoal to black vertical bars. Many specimens develop beautiful turquoise or pearlescent iridescence across the scales, particularly around the face and gill plates. Their rounded forehead, large expressive eyes, short body, and small parrot-like mouth give them an unmistakable appearance, while the blue coloration and dark barring create excellent contrast.

A tank of at least 30 gallons is recommended for a single specimen or compatible pair, with 40 to 55 gallons or larger preferred for groups or community setups. The aquarium should provide caves, driftwood, rockwork, and other structures that allow individuals to establish territories and break lines of sight. Sand or fine gravel works well as substrate. These fish frequently dig, move substrate, and rearrange their surroundings, particularly when breeding, so delicate plants may be uprooted.

Water conditions should remain stable and clean. Temperatures between 76 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of approximately 6.5 to 8.0 and soft to moderately hard water. Polar Blue Parrots are hardy and adaptable, but good biological filtration and regular water changes are important because of their substantial appetite and cichlid-sized bioload.

Feeding is straightforward. Polar Blue Parrot Cichlids are omnivorous and readily accept high-quality cichlid pellets, flakes, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, krill, and vegetable-based foods. Appropriately sized pellets are particularly useful because of their relatively small mouths. A varied diet supports healthy growth, strong body condition, and the best blue coloration.

Temperament is best described as semi-aggressive. Polar Blue Parrots are generally confident, active, and highly interactive, but their Convict Cichlid ancestry becomes particularly apparent when they establish territories or begin breeding. They can coexist with similarly sized, robust community fish and moderately assertive cichlids, but very timid fish may be bullied. Multiple individuals should be given plenty of space, caves, and visual barriers.

Unlike traditional Blood Parrot Cichlids, Polar Blue Parrots are generally fertile and can reproduce very readily in the aquarium. Compatible pairs frequently form at a young age and become devoted, highly territorial parents. Eggs are typically deposited inside caves or on cleaned surfaces, and both parents vigorously guard the eggs and fry. Once established, a pair may spawn repeatedly, and their parental behavior can be fascinating to observe.
