Potamogeton gayi, commonly known as Pondweed, is a freshwater aquatic plant native to Central and South America, with a natural distribution that includes Mexico, Central America, and large parts of South America, particularly along river systems east of the Andes. It inhabits slow-moving rivers, streams, lakes, floodplain pools, and wetlands, where it grows fully submerged in clear to lightly turbid water. These habitats are typically seasonal, with fluctuating water levels, moderate nutrient availability, and soft to moderately hard water.

Potamogeton gayi has long, flexible stems with narrow, lance-shaped leaves that are arranged alternately along the stem. The leaves are smooth-edged, soft, and translucent to medium green, allowing light to penetrate through the plant and reach lower growth. Its growth form is upright and spreading rather than bushy, creating loose stands that sway gently in the current. When grown in favorable conditions, the plant can reach substantial height and may grow to the surface, where it continues spreading horizontally.

In aquariums, Potamogeton gayi is best suited to medium to large tanks due to its size and growth habit. It roots readily in fine sand, silt, or nutrient-rich substrates and benefits from open vertical space. Moderate to high lighting supports healthy, steady growth, though it can adapt to moderate light once established. Gentle to moderate water movement is ideal, as strong current can damage or bend the stems, while stagnant water may allow debris to collect on the leaves.

Water conditions for Potamogeton gayi are flexible. It thrives in temperatures between 64 and 78°F and tolerates a wide pH range from slightly acidic to moderately alkaline. Soft to moderately hard water is suitable. CO₂ supplementation is not required, but consistent nutrient availability, particularly nitrogen and micronutrients, supports fuller growth and deeper coloration.

Nutrient uptake occurs through both the roots and leaves. In nutrient-rich systems, Potamogeton gayi can grow quickly and may require regular trimming to prevent it from shading other plants. Cut stems re-root easily, making propagation simple and allowing the plant to be maintained through routine pruning.

Potamogeton gayi provides excellent functional value in freshwater systems. Its tall, flexible stems offer shelter for fish, fry, and invertebrates, and its leaf surfaces support biofilm and microfauna. It is especially well suited to naturalistic aquariums, biotope-style setups, and outdoor ponds where its relaxed, riverine growth form can be fully appreciated.

Potamogeton gayi is a hardy, adaptable pondweed that brings a natural, flowing look to freshwater aquariums and ponds. Its ease of care, tolerance of varied conditions, and ecological benefits make it a strong choice for larger planted systems that favor realism and function over compact ornamental form.
