Rainbow Emperor Tetra, Nematobrycon lacortei, is a South American characin native to the Río Calima and lower Río San Juan drainage in western Colombia. It inhabits slow-moving rainforest streams, shaded tributaries, and quiet forest creeks with soft, acidic water, abundant leaf litter, submerged roots, and fallen branches. These blackwater environments are heavily influenced by tannins from decaying vegetation, creating dimly lit conditions that enhance the species' spectacular iridescent coloration.
Adult Rainbow Emperor Tetras typically reach about 2 to 2.5 inches in length. Their body is laterally compressed and elegantly proportioned, with long, flowing fins that become especially impressive in mature males. Depending on the angle of the light, the scales shimmer with brilliant shades of turquoise, emerald green, violet, gold, and lavender, giving the fish its common name. Males develop elongated dorsal, anal, and central caudal fin rays that create the distinctive trident-shaped tail characteristic of Emperor Tetras. Their eyes are equally striking, displaying vivid ruby-red irises that contrast beautifully with the metallic body coloration. Females are slightly smaller and deeper-bodied, with shorter fins, softer iridescence, and metallic blue to blue-green eyes that make them easy to distinguish from males.
A tank of at least 20 gallons is recommended for a small school, although larger aquariums provide more natural behavior and allow males to display their best coloration. Rainbow Emperor Tetras should be maintained in groups of at least six, with eight or more being ideal. A densely planted aquarium with driftwood, leaf litter, floating plants, and subdued lighting closely replicates their native habitat while encouraging vibrant coloration. Dark substrates are particularly effective at making their iridescent scales stand out.
Water conditions should remain stable and exceptionally clean. Temperatures between 74 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit are ideal, with a pH range of approximately 5.5 to 7.2 and soft to moderately soft water preferred. Regular water changes, excellent filtration, and consistently low nitrate levels are important for maintaining their health and coloration.
In the wild, Rainbow Emperor Tetras feed on small aquatic insects, insect larvae, tiny crustaceans, and other microscopic invertebrates. In the aquarium they readily accept quality flakes and micro pellets while thriving on regular offerings of frozen or live foods such as daphnia, baby brine shrimp, cyclops, and bloodworms. A varied diet helps maximize coloration, encourages natural display behavior, and promotes long-term health.
Rainbow Emperor Tetras are peaceful schooling fish that make excellent additions to South American community aquariums. They coexist well with Corydoras, pencilfish, hatchetfish, small rasboras, peaceful dwarf cichlids, and other similarly sized tetras. Males frequently engage in harmless display behavior, flaring their fins and intensifying their colors as they compete for the attention of females, providing constant activity without serious aggression.
Breeding is possible in captivity under suitable conditions. They are egg scatterers that deposit adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops in very soft, acidic water. Adults provide no parental care and should be removed after spawning to prevent egg predation. The fry are tiny and require infusoria or other microscopic foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp.
With its dazzling rainbow iridescence, graceful finnage, vivid eye coloration, and peaceful temperament, Nematobrycon lacortei is one of the most beautiful tetras available to aquarists. The Rainbow Emperor Tetra is an outstanding choice for planted aquariums and refined South American community displays, where its brilliant colors and elegant behavior quickly make it a centerpiece of the aquarium.
