Red Eye Goethei Tetra, Hoplocharax goethei, is a rare and unusual South American characiform found in the Amazon and Orinoco regions of Brazil, Colombia, and Venezuela. The species was originally described from Igarapé da Mãe Joana near Manaus in the lower Rio Negro region of Brazil, and aquarium specimens have also been exported from Colombia and Venezuela. It is associated with soft, acidic tropical waters, including blackwater environments with submerged roots, leaf litter, branches, and shaded areas.
Adult Red Eye Goethei Tetras remain very small, typically reaching only about 1.25 to 1.5 inches in length. The body is slender and semi-translucent with a beautiful pale golden to yellowish-silver coloration. A brilliant reflective golden-yellow line extends along the flank, becoming especially striking under aquarium lighting. The standout feature is the eye, which develops an extraordinarily intense ruby-red coloration across the upper iris. In well-conditioned specimens, the combination of the glowing red eye, golden body, and reflective lateral line creates a much more colorful fish than its delicate appearance initially suggests. The fins are mostly transparent, keeping the focus on the brilliant eye and shimmering body.
A tank of at least 15 to 20 gallons is recommended for a proper group. Red Eye Goethei Tetras are social fish and should be maintained in groups of at least eight, with larger schools providing greater confidence and a much more impressive display. The aquarium should include plants, driftwood, branches, leaf litter, and shaded areas while preserving open swimming space. Dark substrate and subdued lighting are particularly effective at emphasizing their golden coloration and intensely red eyes.
Water conditions should remain stable and clean. Temperatures between 74 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with soft, slightly acidic water preferred. A pH of approximately 5.0 to 7.0 works well, although wild specimens may originate from considerably more acidic and mineral-poor conditions. Regular water changes, gentle filtration, and stable water chemistry are important, particularly with newly imported fish.
Despite its tiny size and peaceful appearance, Hoplocharax goethei has an especially interesting evolutionary relationship. It is more closely related to predatory characiforms such as the freshwater barracudas of the genus Acestrorhynchus than to many of the familiar aquarium tetras it superficially resembles. Its mouth contains tiny, needle-like canine teeth rather than the more typical dentition of many small tetras. Nevertheless, adults are peaceful toward similarly sized aquarium companions and behave as small schooling fish rather than miniature monsters.
In nature, Red Eye Goethei Tetras are micropredators that likely consume tiny aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, crustaceans, and other very small animal prey. In the aquarium they readily accept appropriately sized prepared foods, including finely crushed flakes and micro-pellets, along with frozen cyclops, daphnia, baby brine shrimp, and other small foods. Regular frozen or live foods help maintain excellent body condition and coloration.
Temperament is peaceful and social. Red Eye Goethei Tetras can be maintained with other small, gentle species such as pencilfish, small Corydoras, dwarf cichlids, rasboras, and similarly sized peaceful tetras. Because of their small size and relatively delicate feeding behavior, large, aggressive, or extremely boisterous tankmates should be avoided.
Captive breeding remains poorly documented. Reproductive behavior is presumed to follow the general pattern of other small characiform fishes, with eggs scattered among vegetation or other spawning material and no subsequent parental care. Until captive reproduction becomes better established, many specimens encountered in the aquarium hobby are wild collected.
Hoplocharax goethei is a genuinely unusual nano fish that combines delicate golden coloration and an extraordinarily vivid ruby-red eye with the anatomy of a tiny predatory characiform. Its rarity, peaceful schooling behavior, brilliant eye coloration, and fascinating relationship to freshwater barracudas make the Red Eye Goethei Tetra an exceptional choice for aquarists looking for something far outside the usual tetra selection.
