Red Eye Red Tail Puffer, Carinotetraodon irrubesco, is a small freshwater pufferfish native to Borneo, where it inhabits slow-moving blackwater streams, peat swamps, and shaded forest channels. These environments are typically warm, soft, and acidic, with dark tea-colored water, dense vegetation, submerged wood, and minimal current. The species is often found in heavily structured habitats where it can hide and hunt among roots and leaf litter.

Adult Carinotetraodon irrubesco typically reaches about 2 to 2.5 inches in length. The body is compact and rounded with a relatively short snout and large, expressive eyes. Males are especially striking, showing deep reddish to rust-colored tones along the underside and tail, combined with darker upper body coloration and a distinctive red eye. Females are more subdued, usually brown to tan with mottled patterning and less intense coloration. The contrast between the dark body and red highlights gives the species a bold and unique appearance.

A tank of at least 15 to 20 gallons is recommended for a single individual or carefully managed group. This species is territorial and does best either singly or with one male and one or more females in a well-structured aquarium. The tank should include dense planting, driftwood, caves, and visual barriers to reduce aggression and provide hiding spaces. Water movement should be minimal to gentle.

Water conditions should be stable and clean. Temperatures between 75 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of roughly 5.5 to 7.0 and soft water preferred. This species is sensitive to poor water quality, so regular water changes and good filtration are important. Despite being a pufferfish, it is fully freshwater and does not require brackish conditions.

Feeding Red Eye Red Tail Puffers requires a diet of meaty foods. In nature they feed on small invertebrates such as snails, worms, and insect larvae. In the aquarium they should be offered a varied diet including snails, bloodworms, blackworms, and other frozen or live foods. Hard-shelled prey like snails are important to help manage tooth growth.

Temperament is territorial and can be aggressive toward tankmates. Fin-nipping and harassment are common, especially in confined spaces or poorly structured tanks. If kept with other fish, they should be fast, robust species that can avoid confrontation, though many aquarists choose to keep this species in a species-only setup for best results.

Breeding Carinotetraodon irrubesco in captivity is rare but possible. They are egg scatterers that deposit eggs among plants or substrate, and parental care is minimal. Stable, low-stress conditions and abundant cover are necessary for any chance of successful reproduction.

Carinotetraodon irrubesco is a striking and personality-rich pufferfish that combines intense coloration with complex behavior. Its small size, bold appearance, and predatory nature make it an appealing choice for experienced aquarists who can provide a well-structured, species-appropriate environment.
