Red Fancy Tiger Shrimp

Red Fancy Tiger Shrimp is a selectively bred freshwater dwarf shrimp developed from Tiger Shrimp and Bee Shrimp bloodlines native to southern China. While its wild ancestors inhabit cool, crystal-clear mountain streams with rocky substrates, leaf litter, and abundant biofilm, the Red Fancy Tiger is a man-made ornamental variety created through years of careful selective breeding. Highly sought after for its intricate patterning and vivid coloration, it has become one of the most prized Caridina shrimp among aquascapers and shrimp enthusiasts.

Adult Red Fancy Tiger Shrimp typically reach about 1 to 1.25 inches in length. They possess a slender, graceful body decorated with a stunning combination of brilliant white and deep crimson-red coloration overlaid by distinctive tiger striping. Unlike standard Crystal Red Shrimp, the red markings are often broken into intricate lace-like patterns, irregular bands, or fine reticulated lines that give every individual a unique appearance. High-quality specimens display thick, opaque white coverage contrasted by rich ruby-red markings with exceptional pattern definition. Their long antennae, delicate legs, and constant grazing behavior further enhance their elegant appearance, making them a true centerpiece in any freshwater shrimp aquarium.

A mature aquarium of at least 10 gallons is recommended, although larger aquariums provide greater water stability and are easier to maintain. Red Fancy Tiger Shrimp thrive in densely planted aquariums with mosses, fine-leaved plants, driftwood, botanicals, and porous rock that support abundant biofilm growth. Shrimp-safe sponge filtration or other gentle filtration is highly recommended, and plenty of cover should be available for newly molted shrimp and developing juveniles.

Excellent water quality is essential for long-term success. Temperatures between 68 and 74 degrees Fahrenheit are ideal, with cooler water generally promoting longevity and breeding success. A pH between approximately 5.8 and 6.8, very low carbonate hardness, and soft water with a general hardness of roughly 4 to 6 dGH are preferred. Many successful keepers utilize remineralized reverse osmosis water along with active buffering substrates to maintain the stable conditions these shrimp require. Sudden fluctuations in water chemistry should always be avoided.

Red Fancy Tiger Shrimp spend much of their day grazing on biofilm, algae, microorganisms, and decomposing organic matter. In the aquarium they readily accept premium shrimp foods, algae wafers, powdered foods for shrimplets, blanched vegetables, and occasional protein-rich treats offered sparingly. A mature aquarium rich in natural biofilm is invaluable, providing a continuous food source that supports healthy molts, vibrant coloration, and successful breeding.

Temperament is exceptionally peaceful. Red Fancy Tiger Shrimp are best maintained in dedicated Caridina aquariums or with other peaceful shrimp requiring identical water parameters. While adults may coexist with a handful of very gentle nano fish, most community fish will readily consume shrimplets and may stress adult shrimp. A species-focused aquarium provides the greatest opportunity for colony growth and allows their intricate coloration to be fully appreciated.

Breeding is readily achievable under stable conditions. Females carry fertilized eggs beneath their abdomen for approximately three to four weeks before releasing fully formed miniature shrimp. Unlike Amano Shrimp, Red Fancy Tiger Shrimp complete their entire life cycle in freshwater without a free-swimming larval stage. Stable water chemistry, abundant biofilm, and minimal disturbance encourage consistent reproduction and high juvenile survival.
