Red Samolus, Samolus parviflorus, is a cosmopolitan wetland plant found throughout North America, Central America, South America, the Caribbean, and many tropical and subtropical regions around the world. It naturally occurs along pond margins, marshes, wetlands, slow-moving streams, and seasonally flooded shorelines where its roots remain in saturated soil or shallow water. These habitats are typically nutrient-rich and experience fluctuating water levels throughout the year.

In the aquarium, Red Samolus forms a compact rosette of broad, oval leaves that emerge from a central crown. Under moderate conditions the foliage remains green, but under strong lighting and good nutrient availability the leaves develop attractive bronze, copper, orange, and reddish tones that give rise to the common name. The leaves are thick and slightly fleshy compared to many aquatic plants, creating a distinctive texture that contrasts well with finer-leaved species. Mature plants typically reach 4 to 8 inches in height, making them well suited for foreground or midground placement.

Red Samolus grows best when planted directly into a nutrient-rich substrate. The crown should remain slightly above the substrate line to prevent rot. Moderate to high lighting is recommended to encourage compact growth and bring out the strongest red and bronze coloration. While the plant can survive under lower light, coloration is typically reduced and growth becomes less compact.

Water conditions are flexible and forgiving. Samolus parviflorus grows well in temperatures between 68 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit, with a pH range of roughly 6.0 to 7.8 and soft to moderately hard water. Stability is more important than exact parameters. CO₂ supplementation is not required but can improve growth rate, coloration, and overall vigor.

This species feeds heavily through the root system and benefits from nutrient-rich substrate or regular root tab supplementation. Additional water column fertilization supports healthy foliage and stronger coloration. Growth is moderate, and the plant generally maintains a tidy appearance without requiring frequent trimming.

Red Samolus is highly compatible with community fish and invertebrates. Its sturdy leaves resist most grazing and provide a natural focal point within planted aquariums. The compact rosette growth makes it particularly useful for adding texture and color contrast without overwhelming the layout.

Samolus parviflorus is an attractive and adaptable rosette plant valued for its compact size, durable foliage, and ability to develop rich red and bronze coloration. With adequate lighting and nutrition, Red Samolus becomes an eye-catching accent plant that works equally well in nature aquariums, Dutch-style layouts, and community planted tanks.
