Redbreast Acara

The Redbreast Acara, scientifically known as Laetacara dorsigera, is a small and peaceful cichlid native to the lower Paraguay River Basin of central South America. Its natural distribution includes Paraguay, southern Brazil, northern Argentina, and parts of Bolivia, where it inhabits slow-moving tributaries, shallow floodplain pools, forest creeks, and marshy wetlands rich in leaf litter and submerged roots. These warm, soft-water environments are typically shaded, calm, and structurally complex, offering protection and feeding opportunities among branches, detritus, and dense marginal vegetation.

Adult Laetacara dorsigera reaches about 2.5 to 3 inches in length and is easily recognized by the vivid reddish or orange coloration on the chest and belly, especially prominent in dominant males during courtship or territorial interactions. The body is typically olive, bronze, or golden with subtle iridescence, expressive facial markings, and gentle fin extensions. Their steady, deliberate movements and calm disposition make them a standout dwarf cichlid for planted and community aquariums.

A tank of at least 20 gallons is suitable for a pair or small group, with additional space needed for multiple territories. Natural aquascaping with driftwood, caves, leaf litter, sand, and heavy planting closely mimics their native habitat and provides important shelter and sight breaks. Low to moderate water flow is preferred, as this species originates from quiet, low-current waters within the Paraguay Basin.

Water parameters should reflect their natural soft-water environments. Ideal conditions include temperatures between 75 and 82°F, a pH of 6.0 to 7.2, and soft to moderately soft water. Stability is essential, as the Redbreast Acara reacts poorly to sudden changes in water chemistry or temperature. Clean, well-maintained water supports healthy behavior and strong coloration.

Feeding the Redbreast Acara is simple. In the wild they graze for small invertebrates, microcrustaceans, insect larvae, and organic detritus. In the aquarium they accept a varied diet of high-quality micro-pellets, frozen foods such as bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp, and occasional plant-based items. Their gentle feeding style makes them compatible with peaceful community fish.

In temperament, the Redbreast Acara is notably peaceful for a cichlid and mixes very well with small schooling fish, Corydoras, pencilfish, and other calm species. Aggression is minimal and typically limited to brief territorial displays during breeding.

Breeding Laetacara dorsigera is achievable in captivity. They form stable pairs and prefer to spawn on flat stones, wood surfaces, or broad leaves. Both parents participate actively in guarding the eggs and fry. Soft, warm, clean water and a quiet environment encourage successful spawning and rearing.
