The Rosy Loach, also sold as the Mango Loach, is scientifically known as Physoschistura mango. For years this fish was traded under provisional names such as Yunnanilus sp. “Rosy” or “Rosy Loach,” but in 2023 it was formally described as Physoschistura mango. This means that the Rosy Loach and Mango Loach are the same species, not separate fish.

Adult Physoschistura mango typically reach about 1.2 inches (3 cm) in length, making them one of the smallest loaches in the aquarium hobby. Their slender bodies are golden to reddish, with subtle markings and a rounded head shape. Males often display brighter red-orange tones, while females are slightly larger and rounder.

A tank of at least 10 gallons is suitable for a group. They are social and should be kept in groups of six or more to encourage natural activity and reduce stress. Provide a fine sand substrate, plants, driftwood, and leaf litter to mimic their natural stream habitats. Gentle water flow and good filtration are recommended.

Water parameters should include a temperature of 72 to 79°F (22 to 26°C), a pH between 6.0 and 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. They do best in stable, clean conditions.

Feeding Physoschistura mango is straightforward. They accept high-quality micro pellets and flakes, and should be supplemented with live or frozen foods such as daphnia, baby brine shrimp, or cyclops. Their small mouths require fine foods.

Rosy/Mango Loaches are peaceful and do well in community aquariums with small, gentle species like rasboras, small tetras, shrimp, and dwarf Corydoras. Avoid housing them with large or aggressive fish.

Breeding in aquaria has not yet been widely documented. As with many loaches, they are egg scatterers, and successful spawning may require very specific conditions not yet well established in captivity.

Physoschistura mango (Rosy Loach, Mango Loach) is a tiny, active species that brings color and fascinating behavior to nano and planted aquariums.
