The Comet Goldfish, scientifically known as Carassius auratus, is a hardy and fast-swimming variety of goldfish developed in the United States. It is one of the most popular goldfish breeds due to its adaptability, active nature, and striking appearance. Unlike fancy goldfish, the Comet Goldfish has a streamlined body and a long, deeply forked tail that trails behind as it swims.
Adult Comet Goldfish typically reach about 10 to 12 inches (25 to 30 cm) in length, though they can grow even larger in spacious ponds. They are available in a variety of color forms, including red, orange, yellow, white, and bi-colored combinations. The most recognizable are bright orange with white patches or a fully metallic gold sheen.
A tank of at least 40 gallons is required for a single adult Comet Goldfish, with an additional 20 gallons for each extra fish. However, they are best suited to outdoor ponds, where their active swimming habits and potential size can be fully accommodated. Provide open swimming space, smooth substrate, and hardy aquatic plants if kept in an aquarium, but be aware that Comet Goldfish may uproot or eat soft plants.
Water parameters should include a temperature range of 60 to 75°F (15 to 24°C), a pH of 6.5 to 8.0, and moderate hardness. Comet Goldfish produce significant waste, so strong mechanical filtration and regular water changes are essential to maintain good water quality.
Feeding the Comet Goldfish is simple, as they are omnivorous and not picky eaters. Offer high-quality goldfish pellets or flakes as a staple diet, and supplement with vegetables like blanched spinach, peas, and zucchini. They will also accept live or frozen foods such as bloodworms and brine shrimp, though these should be given sparingly.
Comet Goldfish are peaceful and social, doing well in groups with others of similar size. They can be kept with other single-tail goldfish varieties and larger coldwater fish species, but may outcompete slower fancy goldfish for food due to their speed and agility.
Breeding the Comet Goldfish is relatively easy under the right conditions. Spawning typically occurs in spring as water temperatures rise. Males chase females and fertilize eggs scattered over aquatic vegetation or spawning mops. Adults should be separated from the eggs to prevent them from eating them. Eggs hatch within 4 to 7 days, depending on temperature.
Carassius auratus (Comet Goldfish) is an active, resilient, and visually striking species ideal for large aquariums and outdoor ponds, offering years of enjoyment and interaction when given proper care.
