Schismatoglottis prietoi is a freshwater aroid native to the Philippines, where it grows along shaded riverbanks, stream margins, and periodically flooded forest areas. In nature it is often found rooted in crevices among rocks or attached to submerged wood in shallow, flowing water. These habitats are typically warm, well oxygenated, and shaded by dense vegetation, with stable water levels and minimal direct sunlight.

In the aquarium, Schismatoglottis prietoi develops thick, oval to lance-shaped leaves that are deep green and slightly textured. The plant grows from a creeping rhizome, similar in structure to Anubias, and forms compact clumps over time. Mature height generally ranges from 4 to 8 inches, making it suitable for foreground or midground placement. Its sturdy leaves and slow, steady growth give it a refined, low-maintenance appearance.

Care requirements for Schismatoglottis prietoi are very similar to Anubias. It should not be buried at the rhizome; instead, the rhizome should remain above the substrate and can be attached to driftwood or rock using thread or aquarium-safe adhesive. Once anchored, it will gradually secure itself. Moderate to low lighting is sufficient, and excessive light may encourage algae growth on the leaves. Gentle to moderate water movement is ideal.

Water conditions are flexible provided they remain stable. Temperatures between 72 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of approximately 6.0 to 7.5 and soft to moderately hard water. Like Anubias, it does not require CO₂ supplementation, though it benefits from clean water and consistent nutrient availability.

Schismatoglottis prietoi is a slow grower and feeds primarily from the water column. Regular liquid fertilization in planted aquariums supports healthy foliage. Because of its slow growth rate, it is low maintenance and rarely requires trimming. New leaves emerge steadily from the rhizome under stable conditions.

This species is highly compatible with community fish and invertebrates. Its thick leaves resist grazing from most fish, and its compact growth provides shelter for shrimp and fry. It works especially well in naturalistic layouts, shaded aquariums, and aquascapes where hardy, slow-growing plants are desired.

Schismatoglottis prietoi is a durable, adaptable plant that offers the same forgiving care profile as Anubias while providing a slightly different leaf shape and texture. Its resilience, low light tolerance, and rhizome-based growth make it an excellent choice for aquarists seeking a reliable, low-maintenance addition to planted aquariums.
