Silver Arowana, Osteoglossum bicirrhosum, is one of the most iconic freshwater predator fish in the aquarium hobby, native to the Amazon, Essequibo, and Oyapock river basins of South America. Its natural range includes Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, and neighboring countries, where it inhabits slow-moving rivers, flooded forests, oxbow lakes, and floodplain systems. During seasonal flooding, Silver Arowanas move into inundated forests where they hunt among submerged trees and vegetation.

Adult Silver Arowanas commonly exceed 3 feet in length, with large specimens capable of reaching nearly 4 feet under ideal conditions. The body is long, slender, and highly streamlined, covered in large metallic silver scales that reflect light dramatically. Two distinctive barbels extend from the lower jaw and are used to detect prey near the water surface. Their large upturned mouth and powerful body are perfectly adapted for surface hunting, and wild individuals are famous for leaping from the water to capture insects, small birds, reptiles, and other prey.

A very large aquarium is required from an early age. While juveniles are often sold at only a few inches in length, they grow rapidly and require substantial swimming space. A minimum tank size of 250 gallons is generally considered the starting point for long-term care, with significantly larger aquariums strongly preferred for adult specimens. The aquarium should emphasize length and width rather than height, with open swimming space and minimal clutter. A heavy, secure lid is absolutely essential, as Silver Arowanas are among the most powerful jumpers in the aquarium hobby.

Water conditions should remain warm, stable, and clean. Temperatures between 75 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of roughly 6.0 to 7.5 and soft to moderately soft water preferred. Strong filtration and regular water changes are critical due to the fish's size, feeding habits, and waste production.

Feeding Silver Arowanas is straightforward but should be varied. In nature they are opportunistic predators that consume insects, crustaceans, fish, amphibians, and other animals. In the aquarium they readily accept high-quality carnivore pellets, frozen foods, shrimp, fish fillets, earthworms, and other meaty foods. Reliance on feeder fish should be avoided due to disease risk and nutritional concerns. A varied diet promotes healthy growth and long-term condition.

Temperament is generally peaceful toward fish too large to be swallowed but highly predatory toward smaller tankmates. Silver Arowanas are best kept with large, robust species such as sizable catfish, peaceful cichlids, bichirs, stingrays, and other compatible predators. Any fish that fits into the Arowana's mouth should eventually be considered food.

Breeding Osteoglossum bicirrhosum is extremely rare in captivity due to the enormous space requirements. In nature, the species is a paternal mouthbrooder, with males carrying eggs and fry in the mouth until the young are fully developed.
