Super Crystal Red Shrimp, Caridina cf. cantonensis, is a premium selectively bred freshwater dwarf shrimp developed from the Bee Shrimp (Caridina cantonensis) native to southern China. While its wild ancestors inhabit cool, crystal-clear mountain streams with rocky substrates, leaf litter, and abundant biofilm, the Super Crystal Red Shrimp is an ornamental variety that does not occur naturally in the wild. Through generations of careful selective breeding, these shrimp have been refined to display exceptionally vibrant red coloration and brilliant opaque white markings, making them one of the most prized freshwater shrimp available to aquarists.

Adult Super Crystal Red Shrimp typically reach about 1 to 1.25 inches in length. They possess a slender, elegant body adorned with intensely saturated crimson-red markings contrasted by brilliant snow-white bands. Unlike standard Crystal Red Shrimp, Super Crystal Reds exhibit much higher color coverage and opacity, with clean, sharply defined patterns and minimal translucency. Premium specimens often display thick white bands and rich ruby-red coloration that extends across much of the body, creating remarkable contrast. Healthy individuals have bright white legs, clear antennae, and a polished appearance that stands out dramatically against dark substrates and lush green aquatic plants. Their exceptional coloration makes them a favorite among shrimp breeders, aquascapers, and collectors alike.

A mature aquarium of at least 10 gallons is recommended, although larger aquariums provide greater stability and make maintaining ideal water conditions significantly easier. Super Crystal Red Shrimp thrive in densely planted aquariums filled with mosses, fine-leaved plants, driftwood, botanicals, and porous rock that encourage natural biofilm growth. Shrimp-safe sponge filtration is highly recommended, and plenty of hiding places should be available for freshly molted shrimp and developing juveniles.

Maintaining pristine water quality is essential for long-term success. Temperatures between 68 and 74 degrees Fahrenheit are ideal, with cooler water generally promoting longevity and successful reproduction. They prefer a pH of approximately 5.8 to 6.8, very low carbonate hardness, and soft water with a general hardness of roughly 4 to 6 dGH. Many experienced keepers utilize remineralized reverse osmosis water along with active buffering substrates to maintain the stable conditions these shrimp require. Sudden changes in water chemistry should always be avoided.

Super Crystal Red Shrimp spend much of their day grazing on biofilm, algae, microorganisms, and decomposing plant material. In the aquarium they readily accept premium shrimp foods, algae wafers, powdered foods for shrimplets, blanched vegetables, and occasional protein-rich treats offered in moderation. A mature aquarium with abundant natural biofilm greatly contributes to their overall health and breeding success.

Temperament is exceptionally peaceful. Super Crystal Red Shrimp are best maintained in dedicated shrimp aquariums or with other peaceful invertebrates that require similar water conditions. While they can coexist with a few very gentle nano fish, most community fish will prey upon young shrimp and may stress adults. A species-focused aquarium provides the greatest opportunity for colony growth and allows their vibrant coloration to be fully appreciated.

Breeding is readily accomplished under stable conditions. Females carry fertilized eggs beneath their abdomen for approximately three to four weeks before releasing fully formed miniature shrimp. Unlike Amano Shrimp, there is no free-swimming larval stage, allowing the entire life cycle to occur in freshwater. Stable water parameters, abundant biofilm, and minimal disturbance will encourage steady reproduction and healthy juvenile survival.

With their extraordinary red and white coloration, peaceful disposition, and fascinating colony behavior, Caridina cf. cantonensis Super Crystal Red Shrimp represent the pinnacle of Crystal Red breeding. Their exceptional contrast and refined appearance make them an outstanding centerpiece for dedicated shrimp aquariums and high-end planted aquascapes, where they reward attentive care with vibrant color, continuous activity, and thriving generations of offspring.
