The Tiger Nerite Snail, scientifically known as Neritina semiconica (sometimes sold under Neritina natalensis), is a popular freshwater snail admired for its bold, striped shell pattern and its usefulness as an algae grazer. It originates from East Africa, particularly rivers and streams in Kenya, Tanzania, and Mozambique, where it inhabits freshwater to slightly brackish environments.

Adult Tiger Nerite Snails typically reach about 1 inch (2.5 cm) in diameter. Their shells are smooth and rounded with striking orange to reddish-brown coloration overlaid by bold, irregular black stripes that resemble a tiger pattern. The body is dark gray to black with two sensitive antennae and a small operculum that allows them to close their shells when disturbed.

A tank of at least 5 gallons is suitable for one or two individuals. These snails are peaceful and can be housed with almost any non-predatory fish, shrimp, or snail species. They require a secure lid, as they sometimes climb above the waterline. Provide hard surfaces such as rocks, driftwood, and aquarium glass where algae can grow for them to graze.

Water parameters should include a temperature range of 72 to 79°F (22 to 26°C), a pH between 7.0 and 8.5, and moderate to high hardness to support strong shell growth. They are sensitive to copper and should never be exposed to copper-based medications. Clean, stable water quality is essential for their long-term health.

Feeding Neritina semiconica is straightforward, as they primarily consume algae and biofilm. In tanks with limited algae growth, they should be supplemented with algae wafers, spirulina tablets, or blanched vegetables such as zucchini or spinach.

Tiger Nerite Snails are peaceful and make excellent additions to community aquariums. They are one of the best algae-eating snails available and do not reproduce in freshwater, so they will not overpopulate the tank. Breeding requires brackish water conditions, and captive breeding is rarely achieved in home aquariums.

Neritina semiconica (Tiger Nerite Snail) is an attractive and practical species, providing both striking shell patterning and unmatched algae control in freshwater aquariums.
