The Volcano Rasbora, scientifically known as Rasbora vulcanus, is a small, brilliantly colored species of rasbora native to clear, slow-moving streams in Sumatra, Indonesia. It is appreciated in the aquarium hobby for its vibrant red-orange coloration and peaceful schooling behavior, making it an excellent addition to planted or blackwater setups.

Adult Volcano Rasboras typically reach about 1.5 to 2 inches (3.8 to 5 cm) in length. Males are more intensely colored, especially when courting or spawning, with a deep reddish-orange body and iridescent highlights. Females are slightly rounder and have a more subdued gold or copper tone. Their compact size and glowing hues make them ideal for nano to mid-sized aquariums.

A tank of at least 15 to 20 gallons is recommended for a small group. They should be kept in schools of at least 6 to 8 individuals to encourage natural behavior and reduce stress. The aquarium should be densely planted with open swimming areas, and a dark substrate with leaf litter or subdued lighting will help bring out their best coloration.

Water parameters for Rasbora vulcanus should include a temperature range of 73 to 79°F (23 to 26°C), a pH between 6.0 and 7.2, and soft to moderately hard water. They are adaptable but thrive in clean, well-oxygenated water with regular maintenance and gentle filtration.

Feeding Rasbora vulcanus is straightforward, as they are omnivorous and will accept high-quality flakes, micro pellets, and small live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, cyclops, or daphnia. Their small mouths require finely sized food.

Volcano Rasboras are peaceful and do well in community tanks with similarly sized fish such as other rasboras, small tetras, danios, or dwarf gouramis. Avoid housing them with large or aggressive tankmates that may outcompete or intimidate them.

Breeding Rasbora vulcanus is possible in captivity but requires a separate spawning tank with soft, acidic water, fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, and gentle filtration. They are egg-scatterers with no parental care, and adults should be removed after spawning to protect the eggs.

Rasbora vulcanus (Volcano Rasbora) is a beautiful, peaceful schooling fish that brings dynamic color and activity to aquariums, especially when kept in well-structured, planted environments.
