Crystal Black Shrimp, Caridina cf. cantonensis, is a selectively bred freshwater dwarf shrimp developed from Bee Shrimp native to southern China. Closely related to the famous Crystal Red Shrimp, the Crystal Black retains the black pigmentation of its Bee Shrimp ancestry rather than the red mutation selected to create Crystal Reds. The result is a striking ornamental shrimp combining deep black coloration with brilliant white banding. Crystal Black Shrimp are entirely captive-developed ornamental forms and are among the classic Caridina varieties maintained by dedicated shrimp keepers.
Adult Crystal Black Shrimp typically reach about 1 to 1.25 inches in length. Their bodies display sharply contrasting bands and patches of deep black and bright opaque white, with patterns varying considerably between individuals and breeding lines. Higher-grade specimens may develop exceptionally solid black pigmentation and thick, porcelain-white coverage with very little translucency. Depending on the individual, patterns can range from relatively simple alternating bands to highly refined markings produced through generations of selective breeding. Females generally grow larger and develop a broader, more rounded abdomen than males, particularly once sexually mature.
A mature aquarium of at least 10 gallons is recommended, although larger aquariums provide considerably greater water stability. Crystal Black Shrimp thrive in established planted aquariums with mosses, driftwood, botanicals, porous rock, and other surfaces that encourage abundant biofilm growth. Shrimp-safe sponge filtration or protected filter intakes are strongly recommended, and plenty of cover should be available for newly molted adults and developing juveniles.
Water quality and stability are particularly important. Temperatures between 68 and 74 degrees Fahrenheit are ideal, with a pH of approximately 5.8 to 6.8, very low carbonate hardness, and soft water with a general hardness around 4 to 6 dGH. A KH around 0 to 1 dKH is generally preferred. Many successful keepers use remineralized reverse-osmosis water together with an active buffering substrate to maintain the soft, acidic, low-KH conditions favored by Crystal Black Shrimp. Sudden changes in temperature, mineral content, or other water parameters should always be avoided.
Crystal Black Shrimp spend much of their time grazing on biofilm, algae, microorganisms, and decomposing organic material. In the aquarium they should also receive high-quality shrimp foods, algae-based foods, powdered foods for juveniles, and occasional protein-rich foods in moderation. A mature aquarium containing abundant natural biofilm is especially valuable for newly released shrimplets, which spend much of their early life grazing microscopic foods from surrounding surfaces.
Temperament is exceptionally peaceful. Crystal Black Shrimp are best maintained in dedicated shrimp aquariums or alongside other peaceful invertebrates requiring similar water conditions. They can coexist with carefully selected nano fish, but virtually any fish capable of swallowing a shrimplet should be expected to reduce juvenile survival. A dedicated shrimp aquarium provides the best opportunity to establish a thriving colony and allows their dramatic black-and-white coloration to be fully appreciated.
Breeding occurs entirely in freshwater when conditions are suitable. Females carry fertilized eggs beneath the abdomen for approximately three to four weeks before releasing fully formed miniature shrimp. There is no brackish larval stage. Crystal Blacks can interbreed with Crystal Reds and many other compatible Bee Shrimp-derived Caridina varieties, so aquarists interested in maintaining a consistent Crystal Black line should carefully consider which shrimp are housed together.
Crystal Black Shrimp are one of the foundational ornamental Caridina varieties and remain just as impressive today as many newer designer strains. Their crisp black-and-white contrast, peaceful behavior, manageable size, and rewarding breeding potential make Caridina cf. cantonensis Crystal Black an outstanding choice for dedicated shrimp aquariums and carefully maintained planted aquascapes.
