Vampire Shrimp, Atya gabonensis, is a large freshwater filter-feeding shrimp native to West and Central Africa, where it inhabits rivers and streams with moderate to strong current. Its distribution includes river systems in countries such as Gabon, Cameroon, Nigeria, Ghana, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. These habitats are typically warm, well oxygenated, and rich in suspended organic particles that the shrimp filter from the water column.

Adult Vampire Shrimp commonly reaches 4 to 6 inches in length, making it one of the largest freshwater shrimp species available in the aquarium hobby. The body is thick and heavily built with a rough, armored appearance and broad fan-like appendages used for filter feeding. Coloration varies considerably between individuals and may include shades of blue-gray, reddish brown, purple, tan, or nearly black depending on mood, environment, and molt stage. Their large size and unusual feeding behavior give them a dramatic and prehistoric appearance.

A tank of at least 30 to 40 gallons is recommended, with larger aquariums preferred for groups or mixed communities. The aquarium should provide moderate to strong water flow and numerous elevated perches such as driftwood, rocks, and branch structures where the shrimp can position themselves directly in the current to feed. Fine substrate and shaded retreat areas are also important, especially during molting periods.

Water conditions should be stable and highly oxygenated. Temperatures between 74 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of roughly 6.5 to 7.8 and soft to moderately hard water. Strong filtration and regular water changes are important, as Vampire Shrimp are sensitive to deteriorating water quality and low oxygen levels.

Feeding Vampire Shrimp is specialized. Unlike scavenging shrimp, they are filter feeders that use fan-like appendages to capture suspended food particles from flowing water. In mature aquariums they consume fine organic matter, biofilm particles, and microscopic foods naturally present in the water column. Supplemental feeding with powdered invertebrate foods, crushed spirulina flakes, baby shrimp foods, or finely powdered frozen foods is often necessary, especially in very clean aquariums.

Temperament is completely peaceful. Vampire Shrimp do well with calm community fish and other non-aggressive invertebrates. They should not be housed with predatory fish or species likely to harass them during molting. Because they are passive filter feeders, they are best kept with tankmates that will not aggressively outcompete them for suspended food.

Breeding does not occur in normal freshwater aquariums. Like many large atyid shrimp, Vampire Shrimp larvae require brackish or marine conditions for development, making full life-cycle breeding extremely difficult in captivity.

Atya gabonensis is a fascinating and highly unusual freshwater shrimp prized for its size, armored appearance, and unique filter-feeding behavior. In a mature aquarium with strong current and suspended food sources, the Vampire Shrimp becomes an eye-catching and peaceful centerpiece in freshwater invertebrate and community setups.
