Variableleaf Water Hyacinth, Eichhornia diversifolia, is a rooted aquatic plant native to tropical Central and South America, including parts of the Amazon Basin. Unlike the floating Water Hyacinth Eichhornia crassipes, this species grows fully submerged or in shallow emergent conditions along river margins, floodplains, marshes, and slow-moving streams. It is commonly found in nutrient-rich waters with seasonal fluctuations in depth, where it anchors in soft sediment and benefits from strong sunlight.

Eichhornia diversifolia is known for its narrow, ribbon-like submerged leaves that are arranged alternately along a slender stem. Leaves are typically bright to medium green and can take on bronze or reddish tones under intense lighting. The plant grows upright and can reach the water surface, where it may produce small emergent leaves and delicate lavender flowers in suitable conditions. Its overall growth form is more refined and vertical than the floating hyacinth species most people associate with the genus.

In the aquarium, Eichhornia diversifolia is best suited for medium to large tanks where it can grow to its full height. It should be planted in nutrient-rich substrate, as it feeds heavily through its roots. Moderate to high lighting is strongly recommended to maintain compact growth and vibrant coloration. Under low light, stems may stretch and leaves may become sparse. Gentle to moderate water movement is preferred.

Water conditions are flexible but should be stable. Temperatures between 72 and 84 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of approximately 6.0 to 7.5 and soft to moderately hard water. The plant responds best to clean water with consistent nutrient availability. While CO₂ supplementation is not strictly required, it significantly enhances growth rate and overall density.

Eichhornia diversifolia is a relatively fast grower under strong light and adequate nutrients. Regular trimming may be necessary to prevent it from shading other plants. Cuttings root easily when replanted, allowing straightforward propagation and dense groupings. Because it can grow vigorously, balanced fertilization is important to prevent nutrient deficiencies.

This species is compatible with most peaceful community fish and provides vertical structure and cover within planted aquariums. Its firm leaves are generally resistant to light grazing, though large herbivorous fish may damage new growth.

Eichhornia diversifolia offers the distinctive look of a water hyacinth in a fully submerged form, combining upright growth, potential flowering, and adaptable care requirements. When given strong light and nutrient support, it creates a bold vertical accent that works well in naturalistic and heavily planted freshwater aquariums.
