Vesuvius Sword, Echinodorus angustifolius “Vesuvius”, is a cultivated aquarium plant derived from South American Echinodorus species native to the Amazon Basin and surrounding freshwater systems. Unlike broad-leaved sword plants, this cultivar is valued for its narrow, twisted foliage and upright, grass-like growth pattern. It was developed for aquarium use and does not occur naturally in the wild in this exact form.

In the aquarium, Vesuvius Sword produces long, narrow leaves that twist and spiral upward in a corkscrew-like pattern, giving the plant a dynamic, flowing appearance. The leaves are medium to deep green and emerge from a compact rosette growth point. Mature plants typically reach about 8 to 16 inches in height depending on lighting and nutrient availability, making them suitable for midground or background placement in smaller aquariums and midground use in larger setups.

Vesuvius Sword grows best when planted directly into nutrient-rich substrate, with the crown kept above the substrate line to prevent rot. It spreads gradually by runners, producing new plantlets nearby and forming small colonies over time. Moderate to high lighting encourages tighter spiraling and denser growth, while lower light may produce straighter leaves and slower spread. Gentle to moderate water movement is ideal.

Water conditions are flexible and forgiving. Temperatures between 72 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of roughly 6.0 to 7.8 and soft to moderately hard water. Stability is more important than exact values. CO₂ supplementation is not required but can increase growth rate and improve overall density.

As a root-feeding plant, Vesuvius Sword benefits greatly from nutrient-rich substrate or regular root tab supplementation. Additional water column fertilization can support healthy foliage and runner production. Once established, it is relatively low maintenance aside from occasional thinning of older leaves or excess runners.

This plant is compatible with most peaceful community fish and invertebrates. Its narrow leaves provide cover and texture without creating dense shading, and it works especially well in planted aquariums that emphasize movement and natural flow.

Vesuvius Sword is a unique and visually striking sword plant that combines the durability of Echinodorus with an unusual twisted leaf structure. Its upright, spiraling growth makes it an excellent choice for aquarists looking to add texture, motion, and architectural contrast to planted freshwater aquariums.
