Water Sprite, Ceratopteris siliquosa, is a tropical aquatic fern native to Southeast Asia, where it grows in shallow wetlands, floodplains, slow-moving rivers, and marshes with warm, nutrient-rich water. Like other Ceratopteris species, it can grow rooted in substrate or floating freely depending on water level and conditions. These habitats are typically calm, well lit, and seasonally variable, allowing the plant to transition easily between submerged and emersed growth.

In the aquarium, Ceratopteris siliquosa develops broad, finely divided bright green leaves with a softer and more flowing appearance than many stem plants. Compared to Ceratopteris thalictroides, the foliage is generally more elongated and delicate, giving the plant a lighter, more graceful look in the water. Growth is rapid under favorable conditions, and mature plants can quickly form dense masses of foliage either rooted or floating.

Water Sprite is highly adaptable and can be grown planted in substrate or left floating at the surface. When rooted, it works well as a background or midground plant in larger aquariums. As a floating plant, it produces long hanging roots that provide cover for fish and fry. Moderate to high lighting encourages dense, healthy growth, though the species tolerates moderate lighting reasonably well. Gentle water movement is preferred.

Water conditions are flexible and forgiving. Ceratopteris siliquosa grows well in temperatures between 72 and 84 degrees Fahrenheit, with a pH range of roughly 6.0 to 7.8 and soft to moderately hard water. Stability and nutrient availability are more important than exact parameters. CO₂ supplementation is not required but can significantly increase growth rate and density.

This species feeds heavily from the water column and responds rapidly to available nutrients. In nutrient-rich aquariums it grows very quickly and may require regular thinning or trimming to prevent excessive shading. It readily produces adventitious plantlets along older leaves, allowing easy propagation and rapid spread.

Ceratopteris siliquosa is highly compatible with community fish and invertebrates. Its dense foliage and hanging root systems provide excellent shelter for fry, shrimp, and timid fish, while its rapid nutrient uptake helps stabilize water quality and reduce excess nutrients.

Ceratopteris siliquosa, commonly known as Water Sprite, is a lush, fast-growing aquatic fern valued for its soft texture, adaptability, and natural appearance. Whether rooted or floating, it provides excellent cover, strong nutrient uptake, and vibrant green growth that makes it a versatile addition to planted freshwater aquariums.
