The Hercules Snail, scientifically known as Brotia herculea, is a large freshwater snail native to Thailand and Myanmar, where it inhabits slow-moving rivers and streams. It is admired in the aquarium hobby for its striking size and the tall, tower-like shape of its shell.

Adult White Hercules Snails can grow to about 3 to 4 inches (7.5 to 10 cm) in length. Their shells are elongated with multiple tight whorls, forming a pointed spire. In the trade, many are sold with a pale or ivory-colored shell, though this coloration is often the result of polishing or treatment, since wild individuals are typically darker and more mottled.

A tank of at least 10 gallons is sufficient for one or two individuals. The aquarium should have a sand or fine gravel substrate, smooth rocks, and sturdy décor, as these snails will burrow and graze across surfaces. Gentle water flow and stable water quality are important.

Water parameters should include a temperature of 70 to 80°F (21 to 27°C), a pH between 6.5 and 7.8, and moderately hard to hard water to support strong shell growth. Regular water changes and good oxygenation are recommended.

Feeding Brotia herculea is simple, as they are omnivorous scavengers. They will eat detritus, leftover food, soft algae, sinking pellets, algae wafers, and blanched vegetables like zucchini or spinach. They are not the most efficient algae cleaners, but they contribute to the tank’s overall cleanup crew.

White Hercules Snails are peaceful and can be kept with small community fish, shrimp, and other non-aggressive species. Avoid housing them with snail-eating fish or aggressive cichlids.

Reproduction is livebearing. Females give birth to small, fully formed baby snails rather than laying eggs, and they reproduce at a much slower rate than pest snails, so they will not overrun a tank.

Brotia herculea (White Hercules Snail) is a hardy, impressive species that brings unique size and form to aquariums, serving as both a visual highlight and a useful scavenger.
