The Yellow Spotted Rabbit Snail, scientifically known as Tylomelania sp. (Yellow Spot variant), is a large and striking freshwater snail from Sulawesi, Indonesia, known for its bold yellow spotting on a dark shell and elongated “rabbit-ear” antennae.

Adults typically grow to about 3 to 4 inches (7.5 to 10 cm) in length, although some specimens may reach slightly larger. They have tall, spiral shells that taper to a point, often colored dark brown or bronze with bright yellow or golden spots and patches. Their bodies are elongated and muscular, giving them the ability to climb glass or hide partially in sand.

A tank of at least 20 to 30 gallons is suitable for one or two individuals, as they are active but grow large and may stir substrate while exploring. The aquarium should have a fine sand substrate, smooth rocks, driftwood, and plenty of surface area for grazing algae and biofilm. Because these snails may dig or partially bury in sand, a soft substrate is recommended.

Water parameters should include a temperature of about 76 to 84°F (24 to 29°C), a pH between 7.5 and 9.0, and moderately hard to hard water to support shell growth. Consistent water quality and regular maintenance are important for their well-being.

Feeding Tylomelania sp. “Yellow Spot” is straightforward. They are omnivores and scavengers, consuming algae, detritus, decaying plant matter, and leftover food. Supplement their diet with algae wafers, spirulina tablets, and blanched vegetables such as zucchini, cucumber, or spinach. Be aware that in nutrient-poor tanks they may nibble on softer plants.

Yellow Spotted Rabbit Snails are peaceful and can be kept with other non-aggressive fish, shrimp, and snails. Avoid housing them with aggressive, large, or snail-eating species. Because they reproduce slowly, they will not overpopulate the tank.

Breeding is possible: these snails are livebearers, producing small clutches of fully formed young every few weeks under ideal conditions. The offspring grow slowly and require good water quality and ample food to thrive.

Tylomelania sp. “Yellow Spotted Rabbit Snail” is a unique and elegant invertebrate that offers both aesthetic appeal and practical benefits—bringing vibrant shell patterning and substrate-activity to large planted aquariums.
