The Zebra Loach, scientifically known as Botia striata, is a small, active loach native to the clear, fast-flowing streams of the Western Ghats in India. It is highly valued in the aquarium hobby for its striking pattern, peaceful temperament, and effectiveness as a snail control species.

Adult Zebra Loaches typically reach about 3 to 4 inches (7.5 to 10 cm) in length. They have a slender, elongated body with alternating vertical bands of dark brown or black and creamy yellow or light tan, giving a bold “zebra-striped” appearance. The fins are typically banded or translucent, and the head is slightly pointed with short barbels around the mouth.

A tank of at least 30 gallons is recommended for a group. Zebra Loaches are social and should be kept in groups of five or more to encourage natural schooling behavior and reduce stress. The aquarium should have a soft sand or smooth gravel substrate, plenty of rocks, driftwood, caves, and live or artificial plants to provide hiding spots and foraging areas. Moderate water flow and good oxygenation mimic their natural habitat.

Water parameters should include a temperature range of 73 to 79°F (23 to 26°C), a pH between 6.0 and 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. Zebra Loaches are sensitive to poor water quality, so regular partial water changes and good filtration are essential.

Feeding Botia striata is straightforward, as they are omnivorous and will accept high-quality sinking pellets, wafers, and a variety of live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. They also graze on snails and other invertebrates, helping control pest snail populations in the aquarium.

Zebra Loaches are peaceful and do well in community tanks with other small, non-aggressive species such as tetras, rasboras, danios, and Corydoras. Avoid housing them with very large or aggressive fish.

Breeding Zebra Loaches in captivity is rare and not well documented. They are egg scatterers in the wild, typically spawning in response to seasonal changes.

Botia striata (Zebra Loach) is a lively, beautifully patterned species that brings activity, snail control, and unique interest to peaceful community and planted aquariums.
