Zig Zag Tetra

Zig Zag Tetra, Hyphessobrycon hexastichos, is a small South American characin native to the rio Mutum, a tributary of the upper rio Juruena within the rio Tapajós basin of Mato Grosso, Brazil. It inhabits shallow, slow-moving stretches of clear forest streams with sandy bottoms, scattered stones, and patches of riparian vegetation. Unlike many Amazonian tetras associated with blackwater habitats, this species naturally occurs in clear-water environments with gentle current and excellent water quality.

Adult Zig Zag Tetras typically reach about 1.5 to 2 inches in length. They are among the most visually distinctive members of the genus, displaying a brilliant metallic silver to pale gold body crossed by six vivid orange-red horizontal stripes extending from behind the gill plate to the base of the tail. Between these stripes, brilliant iridescent blue bands shimmer as the fish moves, creating a striking multicolored appearance unlike almost any other tetra. The face often carries a soft golden-green iridescence, while the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins develop rich orange to reddish coloration that complements the body pattern. Healthy schools create an impressive display of metallic blue, gold, and fiery orange as they move through the aquarium together.

A tank of at least 20 gallons is recommended for a proper school, though larger aquariums provide greater stability and allow their schooling behavior to be fully appreciated. Zig Zag Tetras are active schooling fish and should be maintained in groups of eight or more to encourage natural behavior and reduce stress. The aquarium should include driftwood, plants, and shaded areas while maintaining generous open swimming space through the middle of the tank. Although they naturally inhabit clear water, darker substrates help emphasize their spectacular coloration.

Water conditions should remain stable and clean. Temperatures between 74 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of roughly 6.0 to 7.2 and soft to moderately soft water preferred. Regular water changes, good filtration, and stable water chemistry are important for maintaining their health and bringing out their brightest colors.

Feeding is straightforward. In nature they consume tiny aquatic insects, insect larvae, and microcrustaceans. In the aquarium they readily accept high-quality flakes, micro-pellets, frozen cyclops, daphnia, baby brine shrimp, and other appropriately sized prepared foods. A varied diet helps maximize their vibrant coloration and overall condition.

Temperament is peaceful and highly social. Zig Zag Tetras do well with other small, non-aggressive species including Corydoras, pencilfish, dwarf cichlids, rasboras, and other peaceful tetras. Their active schooling behavior and exceptional coloration make them outstanding display fish for planted South American community aquariums.

Breeding has been documented only rarely in captivity. Like many small characins, they are egg scatterers that deposit adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or spawning media. Adults provide no parental care and may consume eggs if left in the breeding aquarium.

Hyphessobrycon hexastichos is one of the most spectacular and uncommon tetras available in the aquarium hobby. Its extraordinary combination of brilliant blue iridescence, fiery orange-red striping, peaceful temperament, and constant schooling activity makes the Zig Zag Tetra a true showpiece for planted freshwater aquariums.
