African Red Eye Tetra, Arnoldichthys spilopterus, is a large West African characin native to coastal river systems of Nigeria, Benin, and neighboring regions. It inhabits slow-moving rivers, floodplain channels, forest streams, and vegetated margins where water is warm, well oxygenated, and often lightly stained by organic material. These habitats typically contain submerged roots, aquatic vegetation, and open swimming areas that support large schools of active midwater fish.

Adult African Red Eye Tetras commonly reach about 3 to 4 inches in length, making them one of the largest true African tetras regularly available in the aquarium hobby. The body is elongated and highly reflective, displaying a brilliant silver coloration that flashes under aquarium lighting. Their most striking feature is the intense ruby-red coloration of the eyes, which stands out dramatically against the metallic body. Mature specimens often develop subtle yellow, gold, or orange coloration in the fins, particularly when well-conditioned and maintained in larger groups. Their size, constant activity, and bright coloration make them a highly visible centerpiece schooling fish.

A tank of at least 55 gallons is recommended for a proper school, though larger aquariums are strongly preferred. African Red Eye Tetras are active, energetic fish and should be maintained in groups of six or more, with larger groups displaying the most natural behavior and strongest coloration. The aquarium should provide substantial open swimming space while incorporating plants, driftwood, and shaded areas around the perimeter. Moderate water movement and strong filtration help replicate their natural habitat and maintain water quality.

Water conditions should remain stable and clean. Temperatures between 74 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of roughly 6.0 to 7.5 and soft to moderately hard water. Although adaptable, African Red Eye Tetras perform best in well-maintained aquariums with regular water changes, good oxygenation, and consistent conditions.

Feeding African Red Eye Tetras is straightforward. In nature they consume insects, larvae, small crustaceans, and other aquatic invertebrates. In the aquarium they readily accept flakes, pellets, frozen foods such as bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp, and a variety of prepared foods. A varied diet helps maximize coloration, activity, and overall health.

Temperament is peaceful and highly social. African Red Eye Tetras are excellent community fish for larger aquariums and coexist well with other medium-sized, non-aggressive species. Suitable tankmates include Congo Tetras, rainbowfish, African barbs, peaceful cichlids, and larger catfish. Their size and activity level make them better suited to medium and large community aquariums than small nano setups.

Breeding is possible in captivity but is not commonly attempted. Like many characins, they are egg scatterers that release eggs among plants or spawning media. Adults provide no parental care and may consume eggs if given access to them.

Arnoldichthys spilopterus is a bold, active, and underrated African schooling fish that combines metallic coloration, brilliant red eyes, and impressive size with excellent community temperament. When maintained in a spacious aquarium with a proper school, the African Red Eye Tetra becomes a constant source of motion and one of the most striking centerpiece tetras available from West Africa.
