Annie’s Goby, scientifically known as Stiphodon annieae, is a small and beautifully iridescent freshwater goby native to the fast-flowing streams of Papua New Guinea. It is highly prized among aquarists for its striking coloration, peaceful temperament, and fascinating algae-grazing behavior, making it ideal for well-oxygenated river or stream aquariums.

Adult Annie’s Gobies typically reach about 1.5 to 2 inches (4 to 5 cm) in length. Males display vivid iridescent blue or green coloration along the flanks, a dark stripe running from the snout to the tail, and subtle red, orange, or gold markings on the fins and cheeks—especially during breeding. Females are more subdued, with pale olive-brown tones and less pronounced markings. Both sexes have an elongated, slender body and a fused pelvic fin forming a suction cup for clinging to rocks in fast currents.

A tank of at least 15 gallons is recommended for a small group. Annie’s Goby thrives in setups that replicate their native habitat: use a soft sand or fine gravel substrate with abundant smooth river stones, pebbles, and driftwood. Provide high water flow and strong aeration using powerheads or river tank manifolds, as these fish require well-oxygenated, clean water. Allow natural algae and biofilm to grow on rocks, as this forms the primary diet.

Water parameters should include a temperature range of 72 to 78°F (22 to 26°C), a pH between 6.5 and 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. Pristine water quality and regular partial changes are crucial for long-term health.

Feeding Stiphodon annieae is straightforward, as they are omnivorous grazers. Offer blanched vegetables, algae wafers, and occasional live or frozen foods such as daphnia or baby brine shrimp. A well-established tank with mature biofilm is essential, as they continuously graze on surfaces.

Annie’s Goby is peaceful and best kept with other small, fast-moving fish adapted to similar current, such as hillstream loaches, danios, or white cloud mountain minnows. Avoid slow-moving or long-finned tankmates that may be stressed by the strong flow.

Breeding Annie’s Goby in captivity is extremely rare. Like other Stiphodon species, they are amphidromous: eggs are laid in freshwater, larvae drift to the sea, and juveniles return upstream—making full captive breeding cycles nearly impossible in home aquariums.

Stiphodon annieae (Annie’s Goby) is a dazzling, energetic species perfect for dedicated aquarists seeking unique behavior, vivid color, and a piece of a true mountain stream ecosystem.
