The Apistogramma viejita is a small, colorful dwarf cichlid native to slow-moving streams and flooded forest areas in the Orinoco River basin of Colombia. It is a highly prized species among aquarists for its vibrant coloration, peaceful temperament, and fascinating breeding behavior.

Adult Apistogramma viejita typically reach about 2.5 to 3 inches (6 to 7.5 cm) in length, with males growing slightly larger and displaying more intense coloration than females. Males often exhibit striking hues of yellow, red, blue, and orange, especially on the face and dorsal fin, while females are more subtly colored with shades of yellow and brown. Both sexes have a compact, elongated body and a prominent dorsal fin with a gently pointed profile.

A tank of at least 20 gallons is suitable for a pair or small harem. The aquarium should include a soft, sandy substrate and abundant cover provided by driftwood, leaf litter, caves, and dense plantings to mimic their natural habitat and provide security for breeding. Floating plants and subdued lighting are ideal for reducing stress and accentuating their coloration.

Water parameters for Apistogramma viejita should include a temperature range of 76 to 82°F (24 to 28°C), a pH between 5.5 and 7.0, and very soft to moderately soft water. Regular water changes and stable, clean conditions are essential for their health and well-being.

Feeding Apistogramma viejita is straightforward, as they are omnivores that accept a variety of foods. Offer high-quality micro pellets, flakes, and a diverse mix of live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, mosquito larvae, and bloodworms to encourage optimal coloration and breeding readiness.

Apistogramma viejita is peaceful for a cichlid but can be territorial, especially during breeding. They do well with other small, peaceful fish such as tetras, pencilfish, Corydoras, and small catfish, but avoid housing them with aggressive or much larger tankmates.

Breeding Apistogramma viejita in captivity is possible and highly rewarding. Females lay eggs in small caves or crevices, and they guard both eggs and fry diligently. Provide multiple hiding places and ensure optimal water conditions to encourage spawning and fry survival. Fry should be fed infusoria or baby brine shrimp after hatching.

Apistogramma viejita is a stunning, engaging species that brings both color and dynamic behavior to planted or blackwater South American aquariums.
