Peacock Cichlids, Aulonocara species, are a group of colorful African cichlids native to Lake Malawi in East Africa. They inhabit sandy and transitional zones around rocky shorelines, where they cruise just above the substrate searching for small invertebrates. Lake Malawi is an extremely stable, highly oxygenated Rift Lake environment with alkaline, mineral-rich water and exceptional clarity.

Adult Aulonocara species typically reach about 4 to 7 inches in length depending on the specific species or line. Males are famous for their intense coloration, displaying combinations of electric blue, red, orange, yellow, turquoise, and violet that rival marine fish in appearance. Females are generally much more subdued, usually silver, tan, or gray with faint patterning. Peacock Cichlids have a streamlined but slightly deep-bodied profile with large eyes and smooth, flowing finnage that gives them a graceful appearance compared to many heavier mbuna species.

A tank of at least 75 gallons is recommended for a proper group, with larger aquariums preferred for mixed African cichlid communities. The aquarium should provide open swimming areas combined with rockwork and caves to establish territories and break lines of sight. Sand substrate is strongly recommended, as Aulonocara naturally forage by hovering over and sifting through fine substrate in search of prey.

Water conditions should closely reflect Lake Malawi. Temperatures between 76 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of roughly 7.8 to 8.6 and moderate to high hardness. Strong filtration, high oxygenation, and regular water changes are essential, as Peacock Cichlids thrive in extremely clean, stable water.

Feeding Peacock Cichlids is straightforward. In nature they feed primarily on small invertebrates detected within the substrate using specialized sensory pores on the head. In the aquarium they readily accept high-quality cichlid pellets, frozen foods such as brine shrimp and mysis shrimp, and other prepared foods. A balanced diet with moderate protein levels supports coloration and overall health.

Temperament is generally moderate compared to many African cichlids. Aulonocara species are typically less aggressive than mbuna and do best with other relatively peaceful Malawi species of similar size and temperament. Overly aggressive tankmates should be avoided, and adequate space is important to reduce territorial conflict among males.

Breeding is readily achieved in captivity. Peacock Cichlids are maternal mouthbrooders, with females carrying eggs and fry in the mouth for several weeks before releasing free-swimming young. Males establish display territories and intensify dramatically in coloration during courtship.

Aulonocara species are among the most popular African cichlids due to their intense coloration, graceful swimming behavior, and comparatively manageable temperament. In a properly maintained Lake Malawi setup, Peacock Cichlids become vibrant centerpiece fish that bring constant motion and brilliant color to the aquarium.
