Betta simorum is a robust wild Betta species native to mainland Southeast Asia, with a natural distribution centered in the lower Mekong River Basin across Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia. It inhabits slow-moving or stagnant freshwater environments such as floodplain canals, marshes, rice paddies, seasonal ponds, and vegetated lowland streams. These habitats are warm, shallow, and calm, often thick with aquatic plants and leaf litter, and subject to dramatic seasonal flooding and drying cycles.

Adult Betta simorum can reach up to 4 inches in length, making it a noticeably larger and more substantial species than many wild Betta relatives. The body is elongated and muscular, giving the fish a powerful, confident presence in the aquarium. Coloration is earthy and natural but far from dull, with rich brown, bronze, and olive tones overlaid by subtle iridescent blues, greens, or golds that shimmer when the fish moves or flares. The fins are strong and well-proportioned rather than oversized, lending the fish a rugged, wild appearance that clearly separates it from domestic Betta splendens varieties. When displaying, males show impressive posture, flaring their fins and opercula with surprising intensity for such a naturally colored species.

A tank of at least 15 gallons is recommended for a single individual, with larger tanks preferred for pairs or carefully managed setups. The aquarium should be densely planted and designed around calm water conditions, using floating plants, rooted vegetation, driftwood, leaf litter, and shaded areas to replicate their native environments. Flow should be minimal, as Betta simorum comes from still or very slow-moving water. A secure lid is important, as this species can jump and also requires access to surface air through its labyrinth organ.

Water conditions should reflect warm floodplain habitats. Ideal temperatures range from 76 to 84°F, with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5 and soft to moderately soft water. Stability is critical, as Betta simorum reacts poorly to sudden changes in temperature or chemistry. Clean water and gentle maintenance support strong coloration, confident behavior, and long-term health.

Feeding Betta simorum is straightforward and rewarding. In the wild it feeds on insects, insect larvae, small crustaceans, and other tiny aquatic animals. In the aquarium it eagerly accepts frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia, along with high-quality carnivore pellets. A varied, protein-rich diet brings out their best coloration and encourages natural hunting behavior.

Temperament is generally calm and confident, though males are territorial toward one another and should not be housed together. Individuals are best kept singly or as a carefully monitored male–female pair. When kept with other species, tankmates should be peaceful, slow-moving fish that tolerate warm, still water and will not harass or outcompete them.

Betta simorum is a paternal mouthbrooder. During breeding, the male carries the eggs and developing fry in his mouth until they are fully formed and released as free-swimming juveniles. This fascinating reproductive strategy adds to the appeal of the species and makes it especially interesting for experienced keepers interested in natural Betta behavior.

Betta simorum is a bold, muscular, and distinctly wild Betta that offers a very different experience from domestic varieties. Its larger size, confident presence, and subtle metallic coloration make it an excellent choice for aquarists seeking a naturalistic centerpiece fish with authentic Southeast Asian character.
