Black Devil Spike Snail, Faunus ater, is a freshwater snail native to Southeast Asia, with a distribution that includes Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, and surrounding regions. It inhabits rivers, estuaries, and coastal freshwater systems where water movement is moderate to strong and substrates consist of sand, mud, and organic debris. Although adults live entirely in freshwater, the species has an amphidromous life cycle, with larvae requiring marine conditions for development.

Adult Black Devil Spike Snails typically reach 3 to 5 inches in length, making them one of the largest ornamental freshwater snails commonly available in the aquarium hobby. The shell is long, narrow, and sharply conical, often resembling a dark spike protruding from the substrate. Coloration is typically deep black, charcoal, or dark brown, though occasional specimens may display lighter tones depending on age and origin. The dramatic shell shape and size give the species a striking appearance that stands out among more commonly kept snails.

A tank of at least 20 gallons is recommended, though larger aquariums provide greater stability and allow these snails to display more natural behavior. Sand substrate is strongly preferred, as Black Devil Spike Snails spend much of their time burrowing beneath the surface and emerging to forage. Driftwood, leaf litter, and natural hardscape help replicate their native habitat and provide additional grazing surfaces.

Water conditions should remain stable and clean. Temperatures between 74 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of roughly 7.0 to 8.5 and moderate to high hardness preferred. Adequate calcium and mineral content are important for maintaining shell health and long-term growth. Regular water changes and stable conditions support healthy activity and shell development.

Feeding is straightforward. In nature Faunus ater feeds on detritus, biofilm, algae, and decomposing organic matter. In the aquarium it readily consumes algae films, leftover food, sinking wafers, Repashy-style foods, and a variety of prepared invertebrate diets. While helpful as part of a cleanup crew, it should not be expected to survive on algae alone.

Temperament is completely peaceful. Black Devil Spike Snails are safe with fish, shrimp, and plants and will not damage healthy vegetation. Their large size and armored shell make them suitable even in aquariums containing many medium-sized community fish.

Reproduction does not occur in freshwater aquariums. Although adults may produce eggs, the larvae require marine conditions to develop successfully. As a result, Black Devil Spike Snails will not overpopulate freshwater aquariums, making them an attractive option for aquarists who want snails without the risk of population explosions.

Faunus ater is a unique and highly distinctive freshwater snail prized for its dramatic spike-shaped shell, peaceful nature, and manageable population. Its impressive size, unusual appearance, and usefulness as a detritus and biofilm grazer make the Black Devil Spike Snail an outstanding addition to freshwater community aquariums and planted tanks.
