Black Ghost Knifefish, Apteronotus albifrons, is a large South American knifefish native to the Amazon and Orinoco river basins, with a distribution that includes Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Venezuela, and neighboring regions. It inhabits slow-moving rivers, deep channels, flooded forest margins, and blackwater tributaries, often sheltering among submerged roots, wood, rock crevices, and leaf litter. These environments are typically warm, dimly lit, and rich in structure, with soft to moderately soft water and gentle current.

Adult Black Ghost Knifefish can reach 18 to 20 inches in length, making it one of the larger commonly kept knifefish species. The body is long, laterally compressed, and jet black, accented by a distinctive white band near the tail and often a white blaze on the nose. Instead of a typical caudal fin, the species uses a long, undulating anal fin to glide smoothly through the water with remarkable precision. It also produces a weak electric field, which it uses to navigate, locate food, and communicate in low-visibility environments. This gives the fish an almost otherworldly presence and behavior in the aquarium.

A very large aquarium is required for long-term success. A minimum tank size of 125 gallons is recommended for a juvenile, with significantly larger tanks necessary as the fish matures. The aquarium should emphasize horizontal swimming space and extensive cover, using driftwood, caves, and root structures to create shaded retreats. Lighting should be subdued, as this species is nocturnal and will become stressed in brightly lit, open tanks. A secure lid is important, as startled individuals may attempt to bolt upward.

Water conditions should be stable and clean. Ideal temperatures range from 75 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit, with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5 and soft to moderately soft water. Excellent filtration and regular water changes are essential, as Black Ghost Knifefish are sensitive to poor water quality and dissolved waste. Gentle to moderate flow is preferred, avoiding strong current.

Feeding Black Ghost Knifefish requires appropriate foods and timing. In nature they feed on insects, crustaceans, worms, and small fish, often hunting at night. In the aquarium they readily accept frozen foods such as bloodworms, shrimp, krill, and earthworms, as well as sinking carnivore pellets once trained. Feeding after lights out helps ensure consistent intake, especially in community setups.

Temperament is generally peaceful but predatory. Black Ghost Knifefish will eat small fish and invertebrates that fit in their mouth and should not be housed with tiny tankmates. They are typically tolerant of larger, peaceful fish but may become territorial toward other knifefish or similar-shaped species, especially in confined spaces. They are best kept singly unless housed in very large aquariums with ample hiding places.

Breeding Black Ghost Knifefish in captivity is extremely rare and not well documented. In the wild, reproduction is believed to be linked to seasonal changes in water conditions that are difficult to replicate in home aquariums.

Apteronotus albifrons is an intelligent, graceful, and highly specialized fish best suited for experienced aquarists with the space and resources to meet its needs. Its unique electric sensing ability, smooth movement, and striking appearance make it a true centerpiece species when provided with a large, dimly lit, and carefully maintained aquarium.
