Black Yucatan Molly, Poecilia velifera, is a large livebearing fish native to the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico, where it inhabits coastal lagoons, slow-moving rivers, marshes, mangrove systems, and estuarine environments. Unlike many freshwater fish, this species naturally occurs in both freshwater and brackish habitats and is highly adaptable to varying salinity levels. These environments are typically warm, mineral-rich, and heavily vegetated.

Adult Black Yucatan Mollies commonly reach 4 to 6 inches in length, with males remaining somewhat smaller than females. This variety is prized for its deep black to charcoal coloration, but mature specimens are rarely a uniform solid black. Healthy fish often develop subtle bronze, gold, and copper iridescence across the scales, particularly along the flanks and upper body. The fins frequently display golden to amber edging, especially on the caudal fin, dorsal fin, and tail margins, creating a striking contrast against the dark body. Mature males develop the species' signature sail-like dorsal fin, which can become impressively tall and broad when fully extended. Combined with the velvety black body and warm golden highlights, mature specimens are among the most attractive livebearers available in the hobby.

A tank of at least 30 gallons is recommended for a small group, with larger aquariums preferred for colonies or mixed livebearer communities. Black Yucatan Mollies are active fish that appreciate open swimming space along with dense planting around the edges. They do particularly well in aquariums with hard water and stable conditions and are equally at home in freshwater or lightly brackish systems.

Water conditions should reflect their natural habitat. Temperatures between 74 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit are ideal, with a pH range of roughly 7.0 to 8.5 and moderate to high hardness. Unlike many tropical fish, Black Yucatan Mollies thrive in mineral-rich water and often perform poorly in very soft, acidic conditions. The addition of marine salt is not required but is generally well tolerated.

Feeding is straightforward. In nature they consume algae, biofilm, plant material, small crustaceans, and aquatic invertebrates. In the aquarium they readily accept flakes, pellets, algae wafers, frozen foods, and vegetable-based foods such as spirulina and blanched vegetables. A diet containing substantial plant matter helps maintain long-term health, coloration, and digestive function.

Temperament is peaceful and community-friendly. Black Yucatan Mollies coexist well with other livebearers, rainbowfish, peaceful cichlids, tetras that tolerate harder water, and a variety of community species. Males may display toward one another, but serious aggression is uncommon when adequate space is provided.

Breeding occurs readily in captivity. Like all mollies, Black Yucatan Mollies are livebearers that give birth to fully formed free-swimming fry. Healthy females can produce large broods on a regular basis, and fry grow quickly when provided with proper food and stable water conditions.

Poecilia velifera is one of the most impressive livebearers available, combining large size, dramatic sailfin development, and rich black coloration accented by metallic gold and bronze highlights. Hardy, adaptable, and constantly active, the Black Yucatan Molly makes an outstanding centerpiece livebearer for both freshwater and brackish aquariums.
