The Butterfly Goodeid, scientifically known as Ameca splendens, is a striking livebearing fish native to the Rio Teuchitlán in Jalisco, Mexico. Once widespread, this species is now considered extinct in the wild and survives only in captivity. It is prized among aquarists for its lively behavior, vibrant coloration, and conservation significance.

Adult Butterfly Goodeids typically reach about 3 to 3.5 inches (7.5 to 9 cm) in length. They have a robust, laterally compressed body. Males display metallic silver to gold sides with a distinctive black vertical band at the base of the tail and striking yellow or orange edging on the caudal and dorsal fins—especially prominent when displaying or breeding. Females are larger, rounder, and plainer, with subtle silvery and olive tones.

A tank of at least 30 gallons is recommended for a group. Butterfly Goodeids are social and active, so keeping them in groups of six or more is best. The aquarium should have a sand or fine gravel substrate, rocks, driftwood, and plenty of robust plants, as this species may nibble on softer vegetation. Open swimming space is appreciated, and moderate water movement mimics their natural habitat.

Water parameters should include a temperature range of 68 to 77°F (20 to 25°C), a pH between 7.0 and 8.0, and moderate to hard water. Good filtration and regular partial water changes are crucial, as Butterfly Goodeids are sensitive to poor water quality and benefit from highly oxygenated, clean water.

Feeding Ameca splendens is easy, as they are omnivorous and will eat a wide variety of foods. Offer high-quality flakes or pellets, and supplement with live or frozen foods like daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworms, and vegetable matter such as blanched spinach or spirulina flakes for optimal health and color.

Butterfly Goodeids are generally peaceful but can be feisty, especially males, who may display or spar with one another. They do well in community tanks with other robust, similarly sized fish, but avoid keeping them with long-finned or very timid species.

Breeding the Butterfly Goodeid in captivity is straightforward. They are livebearers with a unique reproductive strategy—females give birth to large, well-developed fry after a gestation of about eight weeks. Provide plenty of hiding spots or dense vegetation for fry, as adults may occasionally prey on them.

Ameca splendens (Butterfly Goodeid) is a hardy, energetic species that brings both conservation value and lively activity to community and species aquariums.
