Calypso Tetra, Hyphessobrycon axelrodi, is a brilliantly colored South American tetra native to the Guiana Shield region of northeastern South America, including river systems in Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, and neighboring drainages. It inhabits slow-moving forest streams, blackwater creeks, and flooded margins rich in leaf litter, submerged roots, and overhanging vegetation. These waters are typically warm, soft, and slightly acidic, with subdued lighting that enhances the species' natural coloration.

Adult Calypso Tetras typically reach about 1 to 1.25 inches in length, but what they lack in size they make up for in color. Mature specimens develop vibrant orange, gold, copper, and reddish tones that seem to glow under aquarium lighting. The body carries a brilliant metallic sheen that shifts with movement, creating flashes of gold and amber throughout a school. The fins are often washed with yellow, orange, and red coloration, giving the fish a warm, fiery appearance that stands out dramatically against dark backgrounds and blackwater aquariums. In large groups, they create one of the most visually impressive displays among the smaller Hyphessobrycon species.

A tank of at least 15 gallons is suitable for a proper school, though larger aquariums provide greater stability and a far more impressive display. Calypso Tetras are schooling fish and should be maintained in groups of eight or more to encourage natural behavior and maximize coloration. The aquarium should include plants, driftwood, leaf litter, and shaded areas while preserving open swimming space through the midwater. Dark substrates and subdued lighting help intensify their colors.

Water conditions should remain stable and clean. Temperatures between 74 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of roughly 5.5 to 7.0 and soft to moderately soft water preferred. Like many small South American characins, they display their best coloration and behavior under stable conditions with regular water changes and excellent water quality.

Feeding is straightforward. In nature they consume tiny insects, larvae, microcrustaceans, and other small aquatic organisms. In the aquarium they readily accept finely crushed flakes, micro-pellets, frozen foods such as cyclops, daphnia, and baby brine shrimp, as well as other appropriately sized prepared foods. A varied diet helps maximize coloration and overall health.

Temperament is peaceful and community-friendly. Calypso Tetras coexist well with other small, non-aggressive fish including pencilfish, Corydoras, small rasboras, dwarf cichlids, and other peaceful tetras. Their gentle nature and small size make them especially well suited to planted and blackwater-style aquariums.

Breeding is possible but not commonly attempted. Like many small characins, they are egg scatterers that deposit eggs among fine-leaved plants and spawning media. Adults provide no parental care and may consume eggs if left with them.

Hyphessobrycon axelrodi is one of the most colorful small tetras available to aquarists, combining vivid orange, gold, and copper coloration with peaceful schooling behavior and manageable size. When maintained in a large school under proper conditions, the Calypso Tetra becomes a dazzling centerpiece that easily rivals many larger and more expensive species.
