The Common Plecostomus, scientifically known as Hypostomus plecostomus, is a large South American catfish belonging to the Loricariidae family. It is native to rivers and floodplain systems across the Amazon and Orinoco basins, though the name “Common Pleco” is often used loosely for several closely related species sold in the aquarium trade.

Adult Common Plecos can reach 15 to 24 inches (38 to 60 cm) in length, making them unsuitable for most home aquariums despite their popularity as juveniles. Young fish display a mottled brown or black pattern that provides camouflage, while adults darken with age. Their bodies are armored with bony plates, and their large sucker mouths allow them to cling to surfaces and graze on algae or detritus.

A tank of at least 100 gallons is required for an adult Plecostomus. The aquarium should include smooth driftwood, large rocks, and sturdy décor to accommodate their size and strength. They appreciate moderate to strong water flow, dim lighting, and hiding areas created by large pieces of wood or caves. Because of their waste output, powerful filtration and regular water changes are essential.

Water parameters should include a temperature range of 74 to 82°F (23 to 28°C), a pH between 6.5 and 7.8, and soft to moderately hard water. Clean, well-oxygenated water is crucial for long-term health.

Feeding Hypostomus plecostomus is simple, as they are omnivorous grazers. They feed on algae and detritus but also need supplemental foods such as sinking algae wafers, spirulina pellets, blanched vegetables (zucchini, spinach, cucumber), and occasional protein sources like shrimp pellets or bloodworms.

Common Plecostomus are generally peaceful but can become territorial with other large bottom-dwellers as they mature. They are best kept with robust tankmates such as large tetras, barbs, cichlids, or silver dollars that can tolerate their activity.

Breeding in captivity is very rare, as this species typically spawns in burrows or caves in riverbanks in the wild.

Hypostomus plecostomus (Common Plecostomus) is a hardy, algae-grazing fish that can live for more than a decade in proper conditions, but due to its eventual large size, it is best suited to large aquariums or indoor ponds rather than small community tanks.
