Dwarf Papyrus, Cyperus haspan, is a small sedge native to tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, as well as parts of Asia and the Americas. It grows naturally along the edges of ponds, marshes, slow-moving rivers, and shallow wetlands where its roots remain submerged in saturated soil or shallow water. These habitats are warm, sunny, and consistently moist, with nutrient-rich conditions that support steady growth.

Cyperus haspan is characterized by its slender, upright stems topped with a whorl of fine, radiating bracts that form an umbrella-like cluster. The overall effect is a delicate, airy version of larger papyrus species. Mature plants typically reach about 12 to 24 inches in height, making them much more manageable for smaller water features. The foliage is bright green and creates a soft, fountain-like appearance when grown in groups.

This plant is best grown with its roots in shallow water or saturated soil, with the crown positioned just above the waterline. It performs well in water depths of a few inches and can also be grown in consistently wet soil. Full sun encourages compact growth and fuller umbrella clusters, while partial shade is tolerated but may result in more open, elongated growth.

Water and soil conditions are flexible as long as moisture is constant. Dwarf Papyrus tolerates a wide pH range from slightly acidic to moderately alkaline and grows well in soft to moderately hard water. Warm temperatures are preferred, generally between 70 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit, and the plant does not tolerate frost, requiring protection or indoor overwintering in colder climates.

Cyperus haspan benefits from nutrient-rich conditions and may require supplemental fertilization in containers or low-nutrient setups. It grows at a moderate rate and can be propagated by division of clumps or by rooting stem cuttings placed upside down in water, where new plantlets will form.

Dwarf Papyrus is compatible with a wide range of marginal and aquatic plantings. Its fine texture and upright form provide contrast against broader-leaved species, and it offers light shelter for small aquatic life in outdoor settings.

Cyperus haspan is an elegant, compact alternative to larger papyrus plants, valued for its graceful umbrella-like growth and manageable size. Its adaptability and visual appeal make it a popular choice for adding height and texture to water gardens and moist planting areas.
