Dwarf Yellow Tail Spiny Eel, Macrognathus pancalus, is a small Southeast Asian spiny eel native to India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and parts of Myanmar. It is commonly found in slow-moving rivers, floodplain waters, canals, rice paddies, and shallow vegetated margins with soft substrates. These habitats are typically warm, lightly turbid to clear, and rich in mud, sand, leaf litter, and submerged roots that provide cover for burrowing.

Adult Macrognathus pancalus typically reaches about 6 to 8 inches in length, making it one of the smaller spiny eel species available in the hobby. The body is slender and eel-like with a pointed snout adapted for probing into substrate. Coloration consists of a tan to light brown base with darker mottling or banding along the body and a distinct yellow to golden coloration on the caudal fin, which gives rise to the common name. The dorsal fin is elongated and supported by small spines typical of the Mastacembelidae family.

A tank of at least 30 to 40 gallons is recommended for a single individual, with larger tanks preferred for long-term stability. Fine sand substrate is essential, as this species frequently buries itself with only its head exposed. Gravel or sharp substrate can cause injury. The aquarium should include driftwood, caves, and shaded areas to provide security. Gentle to moderate filtration is appropriate, and a tight-fitting lid is mandatory, as spiny eels are known escape artists.

Water conditions should be stable and clean. Temperatures between 74 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of roughly 6.5 to 7.5 and soft to moderately hard water. This species is sensitive to poor water quality and requires regular water changes and good filtration. Stable parameters are more important than chasing exact numbers.

Feeding Dwarf Yellow Tail Spiny Eel requires meaty foods. In nature it feeds on insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans, and other invertebrates found in substrate. In the aquarium it readily accepts frozen foods such as bloodworms, blackworms, brine shrimp, and chopped earthworms. Some individuals may learn to accept sinking carnivore pellets, but frozen or live foods are typically preferred.

Temperament is generally peaceful but predatory toward very small fish and invertebrates. Tankmates should be medium-sized, calm species that will not harass the eel or compete aggressively during feeding. Very small fish may be eaten, and aggressive species should be avoided.

Breeding Macrognathus pancalus in captivity is rare and not well documented. Most specimens in the aquarium trade are wild collected, and reproduction likely depends on environmental triggers that are difficult to replicate in home aquariums.

Macrognathus pancalus is an intriguing, burrowing spiny eel best suited for aquarists who can provide soft substrate, secure cover, and stable water conditions. Its manageable size, distinctive yellow tail, and secretive behavior make it an appealing option for Southeast Asian themed aquariums with appropriate tankmates.
