Giant Otocinclus, Hypoptopoma gulare, is a South American loricariid catfish native to the Amazon Basin, particularly within river systems of Peru, Brazil, and Colombia. It inhabits slow to moderately flowing rivers and floodplain channels with sandy or silty substrates, submerged wood, and abundant marginal vegetation. These environments are typically warm, well oxygenated, and contain surfaces rich in algae and biofilm that support grazing species.

Adult Hypoptopoma gulare typically reaches about 3.5 to 4 inches in length, making it larger than most species commonly referred to as Otocinclus. The body is elongated and flattened with a broad head and a streamlined profile suited to clinging to surfaces in gentle current. Coloration is generally tan to light brown with a darker lateral stripe running along the body and subtle mottling across the back that helps camouflage the fish against wood and substrate. The body shape is slightly wedge-like, with the eyes positioned high on the head, giving the fish a distinctive appearance compared with typical Otocinclus.

A tank of at least 30 gallons is recommended for a small group. Giant Otocinclus are social fish and should be kept in groups of five or more to reduce stress and encourage natural behavior. The aquarium should include driftwood, plants, and smooth surfaces where biofilm and algae can develop. Gentle to moderate water movement and good oxygenation are beneficial, reflecting their natural river habitats.

Water conditions should remain stable and clean. Temperatures between 72 and 78 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of roughly 6.0 to 7.5 and soft to moderately soft water. Regular water changes and good filtration are important, as this species is sensitive to deteriorating water quality.

Feeding Giant Otocinclus requires more than relying on natural algae growth. In the wild they graze on algae, biofilm, and microorganisms found on submerged surfaces. In the aquarium they should be offered algae wafers, blanched vegetables such as zucchini or spinach, and high-quality sinking foods designed for herbivorous fish. Established tanks with natural biofilm are highly beneficial for their long-term health.

Temperament is peaceful and unobtrusive. Hypoptopoma gulare does well in calm community aquariums with other small to medium peaceful fish. Suitable tankmates include tetras, rasboras, pencilfish, and other non-aggressive species. Aggressive fish and highly competitive bottom dwellers should be avoided.

Breeding Hypoptopoma gulare in captivity is rarely reported. Like many loricariids, they are believed to deposit eggs on hard surfaces or plants, though their breeding behavior in aquariums remains poorly documented.

Hypoptopoma gulare is an attractive and useful algae-grazing catfish that combines the peaceful nature of Otocinclus with a larger, more distinctive body form. When kept in groups in mature aquariums with stable water conditions and abundant grazing surfaces, the Giant Otocinclus becomes an effective and interesting addition to South American community tanks.
