Half-banded Spiny Eel, Macrognathus circumcinctus, is a small Southeast Asian spiny eel native to river systems in Thailand, Cambodia, and parts of Laos and Vietnam, particularly within the Mekong and Chao Phraya basins. It inhabits slow-moving rivers, floodplains, canals, and vegetated margins with soft substrates and abundant cover. These environments are typically warm, lightly stained to clear, and rich in submerged roots, leaf litter, and muddy or sandy bottoms where the eel can burrow.

Adult Half-banded Spiny Eels typically reach about 6 to 8 inches in length. The body is long, slender, and eel-like with a pointed snout adapted for probing into substrate. Coloration consists of a tan to light brown base overlaid with dark half-bands or irregular blotches along the sides, giving rise to the common name. The dorsal fin is extended and supported by small spines, characteristic of the family Mastacembelidae. Despite their elongated form, they remain relatively small and manageable compared to larger spiny eel species.

A tank of at least 40 gallons is recommended for a single individual, with larger volumes preferred for long-term care. Fine sand substrate is essential, as this species frequently buries itself with only the head exposed. Gravel or sharp substrate can cause injury. The aquarium should include driftwood, caves, and shaded areas to reduce stress and provide security. Moderate filtration and gentle water movement are appropriate.

Water conditions should be stable and clean. Temperatures between 74 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit are suitable, with a pH range of roughly 6.5 to 7.5 and soft to moderately hard water. Good water quality is critical, as spiny eels are sensitive to deteriorating conditions and prone to stress-related illness. A secure lid is mandatory, as they are strong escape artists.

Feeding Half-banded Spiny Eels requires meaty foods. In nature they feed on insect larvae, worms, crustaceans, and small invertebrates found in substrate. In the aquarium they accept frozen foods such as bloodworms, blackworms, brine shrimp, and chopped earthworms. Some individuals can be trained to accept sinking carnivore pellets, but live or frozen foods are typically preferred.

Temperament is generally peaceful but predatory toward very small fish and invertebrates. Tankmates should be medium-sized, non-aggressive species that will not harass the eel or compete aggressively at feeding time. Very small fish may be eaten, and overly aggressive species should be avoided.

Breeding Macrognathus circumcinctus in captivity is rare and not well documented. Most individuals in the trade are wild collected, and reproduction likely depends on seasonal environmental cues that are difficult to replicate in aquariums.

Macrognathus circumcinctus is an intriguing and manageable spiny eel species well suited for aquarists seeking a burrowing, nocturnal predator with distinctive patterning. When provided with soft substrate, secure cover, and stable water conditions, the Half-banded Spiny Eel becomes an engaging and unusual addition to Southeast Asian themed aquariums.
