Julidochromis marlieri, scientifically known as Julidochromis marlieri, is a beautifully patterned cichlid native to the rocky shorelines of Lake Tanganyika in East Africa. Commonly called the Marlier’s Julie or Spotted Julie, this species is prized for its bold markings, interesting behaviors, and compatibility in Tanganyikan community setups.

Adult Julidochromis marlieri typically reach about 4 to 5 inches (10 to 13 cm) in length. They have an elongated, torpedo-shaped body with a creamy to yellowish background color covered in bold, irregular black spots and horizontal bands along the flanks. The head and cheeks feature striking dark markings and a blue or metallic sheen on the gill covers. The fins are typically clear to yellowish with black edging or spots. Males and females are similar in appearance, but females are usually larger and more robust.

A tank of at least 30 gallons is recommended for a pair or small group. The aquarium should feature a sandy or fine gravel substrate with abundant rockwork, caves, and crevices to mimic their natural habitat and provide territories. Dense rock piles and stacked slate will help break up lines of sight and reduce aggression.

Water parameters should include a temperature range of 75 to 80°F (24 to 27°C), a pH between 7.8 and 9.0, and hard, alkaline water high in dissolved minerals, as found in Lake Tanganyika. Stable water quality and regular partial changes are essential for long-term health and coloration.

Feeding Julidochromis marlieri is easy, as they are omnivorous and accept a variety of foods. Offer high-quality cichlid pellets or flakes, along with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, mysis, and daphnia. They will also pick at algae and small invertebrates found among the rocks.

Julidochromis marlieri are territorial, especially when breeding, but can coexist with other small to medium Tanganyikan cichlids like shell dwellers, Cyprichromis, and Altolamprologus if enough space and hiding places are provided. Avoid keeping them with aggressive or much larger species.

Breeding Julidochromis marlieri in captivity is relatively straightforward. They are secretive cave spawners, with both parents guarding eggs and fry. Provide multiple caves and rocky crevices to increase breeding success. Fry can be fed newly hatched brine shrimp or finely crushed flakes once free-swimming.

Julidochromis marlieri (Marlier’s Julie) is a striking, active species that adds personality, intricate patterning, and fascinating behaviors to Lake Tanganyika or African cichlid aquariums.
