The Keyhole Cichlid, scientifically known as Cleithracara maronii, is a peaceful, moderately sized cichlid native to the slow-moving rivers and backwaters of the Orinoco and lower Amazon basins in South America. It is named for the distinctive black, keyhole-shaped marking on its upper side and is well-regarded for its calm temperament and compatibility with community aquariums.

Adult Keyhole Cichlids typically reach about 4 to 5 inches (10 to 12.5 cm) in length. They have a soft, oval-shaped body with a base coloration ranging from pale beige to light tan. In addition to the keyhole marking, they may darken or display faint vertical bars when stressed or during breeding. Their understated beauty and gentle demeanor make them ideal for peaceful South American biotope setups.

A tank of at least 30 gallons is recommended for a pair or small group. These cichlids appreciate a well-decorated tank with soft sand or fine gravel substrate, plenty of hiding spots made from driftwood, rocks, or clay caves, and subdued lighting. Live plants such as Amazon swords or floating species like water lettuce can help replicate their natural habitat and reduce stress.

Water parameters for Cleithracara maronii should include a temperature range of 75 to 82°F (24 to 28°C), a pH between 6.0 and 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. They are relatively hardy and adapt well to stable, clean water conditions maintained through regular water changes and gentle filtration.

Feeding Cleithracara maronii is straightforward, as they are omnivorous. Offer a varied diet of high-quality flakes or pellets, along with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, or bloodworms. Including plant-based foods or spirulina will help ensure optimal coloration and health.

Keyhole Cichlids are among the most peaceful cichlids available and do well in community tanks with other calm species such as tetras, pencilfish, Corydoras, and dwarf gouramis. Avoid aggressive or highly territorial species that may stress them out.

Breeding Cleithracara maronii is relatively easy in captivity. They form monogamous pairs and become more territorial during spawning. They typically lay their eggs on flat surfaces such as broad leaves or rocks and provide attentive biparental care. Fry can be raised on freshly hatched brine shrimp once free-swimming.

Cleithracara maronii (Keyhole Cichlid) is a gentle, attractive species ideal for aquarists seeking a peaceful, easygoing cichlid that thrives in well-structured, softwater environments.
