The Kribensis Cichlid, scientifically known as Pelvicachromis pulcher, is a popular dwarf cichlid species native to the slow-moving, vegetated rivers and floodplain streams of coastal West Africa (especially Nigeria and Cameroon). They are celebrated in the aquarium hobby for their vibrant coloration, ease of breeding, and elegant behavior.

Adult Kribensis reach about 3 to 4 inches (7.5 to 10 cm), with females generally being smaller and more rounded, especially when full of eggs. Their bodies display a base yellow to olive color, accented by bold black vertical bars. Males often develop elongated dorsal and caudal fins and may show red, pink, or purple ventral region when breeding. Females are particularly colorful during spawning, turning deep purple or red on the underside and extending the ventral fins.

A tank of at least 20 gallons (long tank preferred) is recommended for a pair. Provide a soft sand or fine gravel substrate, ample rockwork, caves, and pots for territory and spawning. Dense planting, driftwood, and hiding places help reduce aggression and mimic their natural habitat.

Water parameters should include a temperature of 75 to 82°F (24 to 28°C), pH between 6.0 and 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. Stability in water chemistry is important, especially during breeding.

Feeding Pelvicachromis pulcher is simple. They are omnivorous and accept high quality cichlid pellets, flakes, along with live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, mysis shrimp, and chopped earthworms. A varied diet enhances their color and vitality.

Kribensis are relatively peaceful cichlids but can become territorial when breeding. Suitable tankmates include tetras, rasboras, Corydoras, small catfish, and dwarf cichlids, provided the tank is large and has plenty of hiding spots. Avoid overly aggressive fish that could harass spawning pairs.

Breeding Kribensis is very achievable. They are cave spawners; the female lays eggs on cave walls or inside pots, and both parents guard the clutch and fry diligently. The fry should be fed finely crushed food or newly hatched brine shrimp when free-swimming.

Pelvicachromis pulcher (Kribensis Cichlid) is a beautiful and manageable cichlid that combines personality, color, and relative ease—ideal for community and biotope aquariums with careful consideration of tankmates and breeding behaviors.
