Lamprologus congoensis, scientifically known as Lamprologus congoensis, is a robust and striking riverine cichlid native to the rocky, fast-flowing sections of the Congo River and its tributaries in Central Africa. It is appreciated in the aquarium hobby for its bold personality, unique riverine adaptations, and beautiful markings.

Adult Lamprologus congoensis typically reach about 4 to 5 inches (10 to 13 cm) in length. They have a stocky, laterally compressed body with a silvery or bronze background color accented by a series of dark, irregular vertical bars and spots along the flanks. The fins—especially in mature males—are long and pointed, often edged in blue, white, or yellow, and the caudal fin is sometimes lyre-shaped. Males tend to be larger and more vibrantly colored, while females are smaller with shorter fins.

A tank of at least 40 gallons is recommended for a pair or small group. The aquarium should feature a sand or fine gravel substrate, numerous smooth rocks, caves, and driftwood to create territory boundaries and hiding places. Strong water flow and high oxygenation are essential to replicate their natural riverine environment, so use powerheads or additional filtration if necessary.

Water parameters for Lamprologus congoensis should include a temperature range of 74 to 80°F (23 to 27°C), a pH between 7.0 and 8.0, and soft to moderately hard water. Stable, clean water with regular partial changes is crucial for long-term health and color.

Feeding Lamprologus congoensis is easy, as they are omnivorous and will accept a variety of high-quality pellets or flakes, as well as live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, mysis, and earthworms. A varied diet helps promote their best coloration and vitality.

Lamprologus congoensis are territorial, especially during breeding, but generally peaceful enough to coexist with other medium-sized, robust African riverine species. Avoid keeping them with timid or very small fish, as they may be bullied or outcompeted.

Breeding Lamprologus congoensis is possible in captivity. They are substrate spawners that lay eggs in caves or crevices. Both parents guard the eggs and fry, which can be fed infusoria or newly hatched baby brine shrimp once free-swimming.

Lamprologus congoensis is a hardy, impressive cichlid that brings unique character, riverine beauty, and engaging behaviors to African and biotope aquariums.
